I remember Jim Cornette saying back in the early 80’s, the NWA would re-record over previous episodes on tapes to save money. And after WCW acquired NWA he was leaving the Greensboro office one evening and found a garbage can full of old tapes on his way home. It’s sad how much we probably lost.

I think what makes the Misawa story that much more tragic is when you hear that when he heard Misawa died, Toshiaki Kawada, his greatest rival throughout his career retired immediately.
Obviously thats tragic on the real level, like he retired because someone who was probably his friend backstage died, but even on a Kayfabe level, you imagine a heel character like Kawada getting the news that his greatest rival has died in the ring, the only man who could ever give him real fight was gone, and he retires immediately, because he knows theres no one else who can challenge him.
It's like that episode of Batman where The Joker hears that Batman might be dead, and he goes to commit a robbery, and when Batman never shows up, he puts everything back and says without Batman, it just isn't fun anymore.

Misawa was that rare type of dude that would do magazine interviews gushing about nerdy shit like Pokemon and Fire Emblem games, and then hit the ring and be an absolute badass. Whenever you see some boomer claim that video games made modern wrestlers soft just ask them how they feel about Misawa and watch them shut the fuck up with the quickness. RIP to the legend, there will never be another Misawa.

Maybe the reason why svr2008 career mode sucked so much was because he played a big role in the mode so they had to quickly rework it after what happened which is why so many cutscenes were repeated not trying to spread rumors but if there is a prototype out there maybe there is an entire unfinished career mode to.

As far as Benoit being in SvR ‘08, there is some credence to him being planned for the game but dummied out. If he was going to be on the cover, that’d be a weird forethought by THQ/Yuke’s. Cena, Lashley, and Undertaker were their respective brand’s heavyweight champions after Mania 23 in 2007, and Benoit wasn’t scheduled to win the title until June at Vengeance. Given that most of the games operate with a WrestleMania cut-off date for content (particularly pre-DLC era games), it’d be odd for WWE to tip off the publisher two months ahead of a title swap so that the package was up to date, especially considering none of the 3 who were on it were holding their respective titles by release day.

The Gamesmaster magazine for May 2007 has SvsR 2008 on the cover also as their first feature of the game, maybe the Info about Benoit is in that one. Also the dates hardly match with these old future magazines as sometimes it can be a month either way from release from the one put on the cover.

If they recalled that magazine, there is still a chance some rare copies of the original print are out there. I think it is kind of strange that benoit wasn't mentioned at all in the article if that version of the article was printed before the murder suicide as he was a main even level star and would likely have played a big role in the game with or without being on the cover.

Benoit originally being on the cover for SVR2008 makes complete sense. On the weekend the murder-suicide happened, he was supposed to win the ECW Championship from CM Punk and become the face of that brand. If you remember SVR had Lashley on the cover represented ECW.
