I feel like chops are great when they feel just as good and steady as the groove. If you have the intent of everything you play to groove itself, then it will always groove. Chops can groove. Watching African praise drumming there is so much continuous flow of groove and chops underneath the whole song. Afolabi Emmanuel is a great example

Musicians must put the Song first, doing what is best for the song whether it is grooves or chops is paramount to making a song great. It is not about egos or who is best, it is a group of musicians doing their very best as a team to make a song great and playing as a team.

Musicality is most important….if the chops fit in the groove, go for it….if not, leave chops out. Chops creating “head room” makes sense….work on them, build that “head room”….be ready for any gig.

Groove is like the foundation of the house. Chops are like the home decor.

chop and groove are all good man...but in my opinion Groove is the bread and butter on most tunes ..chops is the rest of the condiments ..and if chop and groove are done tastefully you get the whole sandwhich...The whole song will be musical...but ya ..chop and groove all have there moments in a tune .

Yes... Unreal grooves... Eg: Steve Gadd's Mozambique groove. You don't need chops / fills... As the groove has it inbuilt

Groove is absolutely everything when it comes to a song, chops are fun but they should never interrupt or get in the way of the groove

John Bonham. Fantastic chops but used them creatively for the songs and with other musicians in Led Zep

As a guitarist, I see how chops vs groove is an argument that gets re-litigated under different terms for basically every instrument. I mean, it's an argument that transcends music and flows through most forms of art and culture(painting, film-making, writing, you get the idea.) I guess it might say something about me that I prefer seeing drummers hold this discussion far more than I would guitarists.

This is like asking, which one would you rather be left-handed or right? Handed, there will be pros and cons to both but the biggest pro is to be ambidextrous. That’s how I feel about this conversation. Work on both. And take them is high end, or as deep as a level that is necessary for the type of Drummer that you were trying to be.

You guys as Canadians understand hockey analogy.. Being on the ice, while game is on, without the puck is the groove.. You need to be in the right place at the right time so your team can play well.. Playing with the puck and not losing it to your opponent is the chops part.. You can be flashy but the puck needs to stay with the team or end up in the back of the net.. This Analogy can, of course, be applied to any team sport...
