Mumbai's Overcharging Tuk-Tuk Drivers (How to Take a Rickshaw in India!)

I thought tuk-tuk (rickshaw) drivers went by the meter in Mumbai? Not all do! So I'll show you what to do when they don't. What you'll also notice in this video is both drivers trying to collude on price with other drivers whenever you're in a group situation hiring multiple drivers to get everyone from A to B. They'll always be trying to bargain and asking the other driver how much they're getting - rather than using the meter which avoids all this hassle.

Hailing a rickshaw in Mumbai can be a bit different from hailing a taxi or a ride-sharing service in other cities, but it can be a safe and convenient way to get around the city. Here are some tips to help you hail a rickshaw safely in Mumbai:

Look for a licensed rickshaw: Make sure the rickshaw you hail has a meter. This will ensure that you are not overcharged for your ride.

Know the fare: Familiarize yourself with the standard fare for your route before you hail a rickshaw. This will help you negotiate a fair price and avoid being overcharged.

Avoid hailing from busy roads: Avoid hailing a rickshaw from busy roads or intersections, which can be unsafe. Instead, look for a designated rickshaw stand or ask a local for recommendations.

Sit in the back: When you get into the rickshaw, sit in the back seat and close the door securely. This will help you stay safe in case of an accident or theft.

Share your ride details: Share your ride details, including the driver's name, license plate number, and destination, with a friend or family member. This will ensure that someone knows where you are and can help you in case of an emergency.

By following these tips, you can safely hail a rickshaw and enjoy the sights and sounds of Mumbai.

Always verify that the meter is working and set to the correct fare before starting the journey. What other tips do you have for taking rickshaws?

You can report overcharging to the Maharashtra Traffic Police through the MumTrafficApp app. But I suspect no foreigner is going to want to deal with the Police, plus it's not worth the time for tourists anyway. Locals with this constant problem may want to report it. So just stick to ride apps, and try to travel outside of rush hours because the ride apps run out of cars often in Mumbai.

We found in Mumbai if the rickshaw drivers stop and try to haggle you for a ride just ignore them. Only approach the ones that ignore you. They're almost always honest. The other trick is to use google maps in front of them so they don't take you the long way round.

In Chennai, metres are installed but NO DRIVER will use it. Oh well, in my lifetime (more than 20 years) of using tuk tuks, I have been charged "by the meter" only a few (less than 5) times.

I’m quite surprised this happened to you in Mumbai. I never rode a rickshaw without a meter in last 25 years of visiting Mumbai. Don’t know if it’s due to rush hour or the auto wala’s picked you guys aren’t local.

Many people don't know about meter tampering it happens a lot in mumbai. They manipulate the meters ecu & control the meter through a hidden switch beside & below thier accelerator. By pressing the button the meter think kilometers are running & jumps the price very fast, faster than usual kilometers jump which increases gradually after every while. There is red dot button at last of the price meter row. That button keeps on blinking while the rickshaw is moving & measures the distance & fare accordingly. That red blinking button stops blinking when the rickshaw has stopped at a signal or stalled. If that button keeps on blinking even at stalled or stopped rickshaw that means the meter has been tampered & the driver is using button to raise the km & price.

Mumbai rickshaw drivers are still one of the most honest ones in India but the quality has degared substantially post covid. Your travels teach us so much, so keep exploring bro 🤘

Nice to see you and your wife traveling together Karl, it's to bad you have to deal with stuff like this though, I'll stick to the bipedal method after watching that gong show with those shaw drivers, wow. Thanks for the video just the same, well done. :)

NAHI CHAHIYE JI! It's an emotion in itself haha :D Edit: Here in Tamil Nadu, there is a fight between rapido and auto drivers lol. These auto drivers don't understand they are the problem that has led to ppl using other services

I am born and brought up in Mumbai. I have never ever not paid by meter. But yes, I do agree that when the autowala recognizes tourists, they try to charge more.

When I was in Mumbai, around 80% of the Tuk-Tuk drivers refused to take me when I said I would only travel with them if the meter was turned on. The normal taxis all used meter even without asking.

In Mumbai, when you come out of Airport, there would be many Auto rickshaw walas who don’t use meter and ask for Rs 250, 300 or so for a ride. But, If you take a walk from Airport’s exit to the main road (walking distance) then you can easily find Auto rickshaws running according to meter readings. 🙌🏻

On my recent trip to Delhi I tried the uber autorickshaw option. The driver would accept and then cancel a minute or so later. Agree..any trip over 200 rupees take an uber/ola car
