Pronounced exactly as it’s written is a bit of a stretch.
I mean sure most words are simple to pronounce but if you only know English you’ll find sounds like uu and oë hard to say
In fact the word oë means eyes and oog mean eye.
It gets very confusing with diminutives like blom (flower) becomes blommetjie (little flower)
The tjie here is pronounced like the chie in chief
Slight differences in sound like vuur and vier are just annoying at times
The ie is like the ee in breeze while the uu is so similar that I can’t think of an English example that isn’t just the same as ie
Even simple ones like w is v and v is f but f is still f and only used at the beginning of words
The main thing that is torture to learn is the sentence structure where English has “The dog barked at the cat”
Afrikaans has “The dog ‘het’ for the cat ‘ge’bark”
Where het is to say they do so and ge is added to the start of the verb to say barked

Afrikaans is a pretty interesting language and is actually the youngest language in the world but is also currently dying out as most people in South Africa tend to just learn English as it is likely they’ll not stay in SA their whole lives, cause well no one’s ever heard about incredible companies like Apple and BMW coming out of SA.
There are several people who are actually South African and you wouldn’t realise it at a a first glance like Elon Musk.
