Tips for sitting at the hairdresser when you have Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)

Ehlers-danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of rare inherited conditions that affect connective tissue. Connective tissues provide support in skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones. For me, I have been diagnosed with hEDS (Hypermobile EDS) which is a specific type of EDS and I've been dealing with it my entire life.

The "normal" things in life, like seeing a movie, play, concert, sitting on the bus, train, plane, or at the hairdresser become excruciating tasks that I often fear due to the pain that will follow. I wanted to share this tip for the hairdresser because it really lowered my pain level so I hope it can help some of you as well. PS- HOW CUTE IS MY ANIMAL CROSSING t-SHIRT!!!!

I recently had a colleague with EDS who unfortunately was let go because she could no longer keep up with the tasks because of her illness. That really opened my eyes as to how serious EDS is

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 11 and Multiple Sclerosis about 5-6 years ago, I'm also oddly hypermobile. Letting as many people in your life as possible KNOW what is going on, even your hairdresser, benefits us ALL in the long run. Don't be shy if you need to move, if you need a cane, or even if you have to repeat yourself, "This HURTS. I need to move/adjust.". Speak up. Speak your truth.

Martina was the reason I started my journey to get my hEDS diagnosed and is still my EDS mother.😊

Martina, you’ve showed immense resilience throughout everything—and despite all that has happened—you still show us incredible content. When I was in Tokyo, Japan about 2 weeks ago, I wanted to check out Kichijoji just because you’ve mentioned it before. I’m not going to lie, I had hoped to run into you and give you the biggest hug because I adore you and what you show us on your YouTube channel!

I love the Animal Crossing shirt! Good to see you've found additional health and mobility aids to help you in your daily life! I do not have a disability myself, but I've been noticing as I get older, my body does not tolerate being seated in harder seats for a long time, and the little bit of cushion on office chairs isn't enough. Perhaps I need to invest in a keester-cushion myself!

It was watching you and having you talk about hEDS that actually made me realise that what i was going through wasn't just normal, and not everyone had this kind of pain. And it's thanks to that that i got an actual diagnosis along with arthritis in my knees and fibro. You will always be someone i really look up to! So thank you for that Martina ❤️ And anyone questioning the pelvis belts get one they are bloody amazing. I have trouble walking without severe pain in my hips, and one of those belts just seem to keep my hip joints where they should be and minimise the pain so i can walk up the street. Seriously, life changing 😊

I have different conditions but I love seeing this because it makes me feel like it's okay to need help with certain things and not to be embarrassed to have mobility or chronic illness aids despite our young age. I can't tell you how many times I should have worn a brace or something and chose not to and ended up in horrible pain all day!

I've had some struggles with health since 2020. One of my clients pointed out I would have EDS. Turns out I do! I'm glad to have some sort of "reason" for my health issues and pain.

My mum is in the process of getting a diagnosis for her hyper mobility. Recently had a partial knee replacement, since her knee cap slipping around in her joint caused alot of damage. Please share more tips so I can share with her. You are such a positive person, and I hope she can stay positive like you ❤️

"just holding myself together" the hefty cackle I released afterwards 😂😭 that's amazing. I think it's amazing you have so many great ways to keep a handle on your condition! I hope your condition can become less serious/get a cure one day in your lifetime!
