1346: 15,000 English soldiers just invaded France, brutally pillaging and burning the countryside in Normandy. English King Edward III was marching towards Paris. So to finally stop the carnage, French King Philip VI assembled a massive 30,000-strong army. English King Edward III knew he would be outnumbered, so he decided to tactically organize his troops on a hill, placing his longbowmen on the flanks and his infantry in the center. Philip met the English at Crecy and sent in his crossbowmen to begin the assault. However, for some reason, the crossbowmen had no shields, and even worse, the rain had rendered their crossbows useless. So the English longbowmen completely decimated the incoming crossbowmen, forcing them to retreat. Seeing them retreat, the mounted French knights drew their swords and began charging straight into the English formation. This had no better of an outcome. The muddy uphill terrain and retreating crossbowmen made the cavalry extremely slow and vulnerable. They too were cut down by a ferocious horde of arrows. Still, the rest of the French persisted with charge after charge. The few that did reach the English line fought in fierce hand-to-hand combat. Ultimately, after 15 failed charges, the French suffered thousands of casualties, forcing them to retreat.
