Parents cannot prepare their children for real life because they don't know the game rules for financial well-being. You must learn financial literacy yourself and escape this vicious circle.

2 - You need to work for money. Don't blame your parents for this wrong lesson - they never knew better. But if you're going to work for money, you will be forever poor. You earn money by solving problems for other people. The bigger the problem you can solve, the more money you will get for your solution.

3 - Play it safe. Don't take unnecessary risks - get into college, get a job, and slowly progress through the school years. By age 60, you'll finally pay off your mortgage; if you're lucky, you'll have some savings left. However, there are better things you can do in this world. The more risk you take, the more money you can make. The less risk you take, the less you earn. Government bonds will give you 2%, which is lower than inflation. With the stock market, you can expect to get 10%.
