Sometimes memes have an important message.
If a medical provider doesn't have native-level fluency in a language and doesn't know specialized medical terminology in that language, they shouldn't be working with patients in that language.
If you want to learn more, check out Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. It's actually the law to provide a qualified interpreter to patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) in most medical settings.
Many health systems have mechanisms for evaluating the language proficiency of medical providers in order to reduce their legal liability and improve patient care for this reason.
P.S. Google Translate and AI interpreting services have very strict limits on when they can be used in healthcare settings. The technology just isn't there yet, and likely won't be for a very long time, if ever.

This workshop is all about exploring ethical considerations for both spoken and sign language interpreters when it comes to interpreting for diverse communities. We'll take a look at what we may unintentionally bring with us that can have an impact on the interpreted encounter, such as stigma, biases, privilege, and misconceptions.
We'll also examine queer and LGBTQ+ mental health, considering whether we have an ethical obligation to *either* support wellbeing *or* prevent harm, as well as the differences between these two concepts.
Xane and I have put a lot of work into this, and if I may say so, we're a pretty delightful duo to spend 3 hours with 😉

I'm a dual-certified Spanish medical interpreter and interpreter educator who produces free educational content! I believe every interpreter, whether remote or in-person, in the U.S., or outside of it, should have the same opportunities for professional growth. At the end of the day, what matters most is that we're providing the highest quality of service to the marginalized populations we serve.
