Hey everyone! Apologies for being away the past month. My gallbladder decided to stage a mutiny (ugh, drama), and I had to have unexpected surgery. Luckily, the procedure went very well. I'm resting up, recovering, and feeling much better. I'll be back on my feet and making videos again soon.

In the meantime, I'm looking for media recommendations. I just know that y'all have impeccable taste, so pls let me know what you've been obsessed with lately.

Here's what I've been enjoying during my convalescent era:

- Disco Elysium (Video Game)
How to even describe this game? It's role-playing game meets interactive novel meets Lynchian existential crisis, all set in this richly textured, dystopian world that is as grim as it is beautiful. You play as an amnesiac cop with deep personal issues who's dropped into the middle of a murder investigation. The objective is to solve the mystery while simultaneously working through your own troubled psyche.

This game is for you if you like beautiful art, character-driven narratives, deep lore, and rich world-building. Even if you're not much of a gamer, I think you might enjoy it. The game is more akin to a playable graphic novel than anything else. I'm not a super experienced gamer, having started gaming just this year, and Disco Elysium blew my mind!

- The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (TV Series)
Any other Real Housewives fans here??? I'm kinda new to the Bravo world and had only seen parts of RHONY before now, but I had heard that early RHOBH is some of the best reality TV out there. Y'all weren't lying! I've now watched seasons 1-3, and it's been fantastic. I love just how rich and delulu the whole cast is and can't get enough. What should I watch next? Salt Lake City? Vanderpump Rules? Below Deck??

- This Podcast Will Kill You (Podcast: thispodcastwillkillyou.com/)
Strangely, this show that's all about (potentially) fatal diseases is my comfort podcast. Each episode revolves around a disease or other fascinating health topic that you've always wondered about but never knew the answer to. Things like salmonella, tapeworms, tetanus, etc.

The two hosts (both named Erin) have post-grad degrees in disease ecology and are so knowledgeable yet communicate so effectively in an accessible way. I love their banter, empathy, and sensitivity. Just, yeah, it's a great podcast, but I feel like I'm not describing it super well. If you're into this kind of stuff at all, you should definitely check it out.

- Noah Daniel (YouTube Channel: ‪@noahdaniel.studio‬ )
Very thoughtful and considered videos revolving around interior design. This is a pretty new channel, but Noah has put out some amazing content so far. I enjoy his sensible approach to design that doesn't feel sensationalist or snooty. I love the calm and cozy feel of the videos. Check out this channel if you're looking for good vibes and good advice on interior design!

We just passed 100,000 subscribers on the channel. What even!!!!! Thank you so much to everyone who's subscribed, commented, liked, watched, and made my recipes. You are all the absolute best.

In other words, the video this week is slightly delayed. It's an in-depth test of LAUNDRY STAIN REMOVERS.

Being in the kitchen so much, I'm super prone to clothing stains. It's kind of the bane of my existence. So, I wanted to find out: what is actually the most effective stain remover?

In classic Sheldo style, what started out as a small test on a handful of food stains has grown into a full-on shootout, pitting TWELVE stain fighting products against SIXTEEN stubborn household stains.

I figured that since I'm doing the test anyway, I might as well make it as comprehensive as possible.

The products I'm testing:
- OxiClean Powder
- OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover Spray
- OxiClean MaxForce Spray
- Shout Triple-Acting Spray
- Spray 'n Wash (Resolve for Canadians)
- Tide Original Detergent
- Tide To Go Pen
- Tide Rescue Stain Remover Spray
- Dawn Dish Soap
- Dawn Powerwash
- Lestoil Heavy-Duty Cleaner
- DIY Stain Remover

As we speak, I'm deep in the midst of staining, scrubbing, washing, and measuring results. It's a lot of work but also a lot of fun. I feel like a mad scientist!

The video will be up sometime next week. Keep an eye out for it.

Even better, turn on notifications to be updated whenever I upload a new video.

Hope you have a great weekend!

"The Full Scoop" vs. "The Field Guide"

I'm trying out something new where I'll be releasing two versions of the same recipe video.

I've always had a REALLY hard time editing my videos down to fit within the expected 10-15 minutes. Having to cut so tight means not only sacrificing detail, but also candid moments. It creates this illusion of 'perfection' that doesn't reflect the real world.

Instead of trying to compromise in one video, why not just make two versions?

“The Full Scoop”
The unabridged video recipe. I share all my tips and tricks, go through each step in full detail, and explain the “why” behind everything we do. Expect to see spur-of-the-moment decisions, unexpected outcomes, and mistakes or mishaps. You’ll see how I remedy any problems that may arise. Baking and cooking often don’t go perfectly, but you wouldn’t know that from watching most recipe videos. In reality, it’s in fixing mistakes where we often learn the most. “The Full Scoop” is not concerned with fitting into a specific video runtime; it’s for the uncompromising and the curious.

“The Field Guide”
The quick-reference companion edition. This is the same recipe, condensed to focus on just the essential steps and key points. It’s designed to be an easy guide to follow along with while you’re in the kitchen. Think of “The Field Guide” as an enhanced version of the written recipe, providing visual cues and reminders for each step. Once you’ve gotten the full rundown by watching “The Full Scoop”, or if you’re simply looking for a concise, no-frills recipe, “The Field Guide” is the resource you'll return to time and time again.

"The Full Scoop" will be uploaded first and then "The Field Guide" a few days later.

I'm excited to explore the potential of this new format and hope you all enjoy it as well!

Hi friends, Sheldo here. It's been too long. I've really missed you all 🥺

First off, to everyone that reached out while I was away, thank you for the kindness and gentleness with which you expressed your concern. The mindful respect of appropriate boundaries that we got going on in this lil' corner of the internet is _so_ cool.

I'm doing okay! I never meant to take so much time off. What started out as a short break from social media turned into a long hiatus. I wish I could say that I spent the last year-and-a-bit living my best life and thriving; but, to be honest, a lot of the time was spent grappling with anxiety and self-doubt.

I don't really want to unpack everything right here, right now, but, maybe sometime soon, we can talk more. I'm happy to delve into my mental health journey, living with ADHD, and whatever else. I think it's very important that we have conversations about this stuff because it truly can feel so isolating when, in reality, most everyone has struggled at one time or another.

I think a lil' Q&A video could be fun. Btw, it doesn't have to be all serious. Like, please ask me dumb (but still respectful) questions. Whatever you want to know. You can start here in the comments. Leave your questions and I'll gather them up for the Q&A!

Part of getting myself unstuck is finding joy in creating things again and doing things that feel a bit scary. For some reason, that's making and posting videos here. I'd conjured this spectre of unrealistic expectations for myself that's only grown larger and larger with each day I didn't make a video. I felt like since I'd been away for so long, whatever I made next HAD to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. I know it makes no sense, but you try telling that to my anxiety.

So yea, I'm back and will be trying to post regularly again. I can't wait to get into the swing of things. There's a long backlog full of video ideas that I'm super excited about.

I'll commit to a bi-weekly (once every two weeks) upload schedule, for now, while I figure things out again. First video back will be live TOMORROW (thursday) MORNING! It's a slightly different format of recipe video that I had a lot of fun shooting. Can't wait for you to see it.

Bye for now, but talk soon.

Love,
Sheldo

Me recently being very cute. On my head is this flower thing that Jordo crocheted. It's going to become part of a big blanket at some point.

Pic #2
My sister (Sherry) and me, June 2002, rocking some dope fits. Btw, Sherry has a YouTube channel where she posts cool vlogs. Jordo and I make appearances in her "Salt Spring Island" vlogs from last fall. You should definitely go check those out and subscribe to her channel: ‪@SherryLynnn‬

Never thought I'd ever share this photo but, in the spirit of being vulnerable, here it is for your enjoyment. Sheldo circa 2004, probably thinking he was hot shit. Asian photo studios are such a vibe (iykyk)

Sheldo here with the perfect summer recipe(s). Smashed cucumber salad, five ways:

The Classic — what you'll find at most Chinese restaurants. Tangy & Garlicky.
The Scallion Oil — super savoury aromatic infused dressing. SO good with rice.
Sheldo's Special — not to pick favourites, but I've been making this salad for years and it's my signature. Spicy & nutty. Hits every flavour note.
The Raita — inspired by the Indian yogurty condiment. Super refreshing and great to temper spicy foods.
The Greek — this is the salad of my dreams. So bright, fresh, and herby. Makes me want to go on vacation!

You could be enjoying THAI MANGO STICKY RICE in just ONE HOUR.

It’s the height of mango season right now (in the northern hemisphere) and the fruits are perfectly ripe, so so delicious. And the best way to eat mangoes is with sticky rice.

Rich coconut-y rice contrasts perfectly with juicy mangoes. Topped off with a sweet & salty coconut sauce.

Usually this dish can take up to 2 days to make because the rice needs to be soaked overnight. With some boiling water and the microwave, the process can be shortened to just 30 minutes.

Video is up on the channel now!

Those of you who guessed Chinese BBQ Pork Buns / Char Siu Bao in the last post get a gold star! 🌟

Not only pork though, because I've created two other filling options: chicken and mushroom. This one's for my veg, halal & kosher friends!

Full video is up now so go check it out 🙂

Sneaky peek at the upcoming video. Can you tell what the recipe is going to be? Bonus points (of no real value) to anyone that can guess 🤣🏆

Further deets: it’s traditionally not at all halal, vegetarian, or kosher. But, I’ve created three different adaptations, suited for different diets.

I know I said the next video would be on meringue, but y’all asked so many great questions that there’s no way to fit it all in one video. So, I’m planning a small series to thoroughly delve into the world of meringue: testing all the myths, comparing all the methods, and answering all of your troubleshooting questions. It’ll be the first series on Sheldo’s Kitchen and I’m real hyped about it!!!

Also, sorry for the lack of videos the past couple of weeks. Ya boy finally came down with covid at the beginning of the month. Thankfully, being vaxxed and boosted, I had a comparatively mild case and recovered quickly. I did lose part of my sense of taste and smell though. That was quite scary and, understandably, put a damper in recipe testing 😤

My taste has fully recovered and I’m all good now (it took about a week and a half) so it’s full speed ahead.

You can expect the next video (the one pictured here) some time this weekend!

By the way, happy May-long to those of you with extra days off this weekend. Hope you get to spend some time in the sun with loved ones ❤️

Hi! It’s my birthday! It’s actually my partner’s b-day as well. Yep, we share the same birth date and birth year. What are the chances???

I‘ll take any chance possible to make a cake so I like to bake my own every year. Kept it simple this time around.

Ube chiffon + fresh mango + stabilized whipped cream

(Of course, recipes for the cake and whipped cream on my channel if you haven’t seen them already. I added 2 tsp of ube extract to the 8” cake!)

For my Vancouver friends, I’m doing a FLASH GIVEAWAY of this cake. I baked an extra to share with one of you!

Check out my Instagram stories for full details and to enter.

www.instagram.com/sheldoskitc...

Winner will be chosen tomorrow (May 11th) at 10am PST. Must be able to pick up the cake in the Lower Mainland tomorrow evening.

Hope is all well with you and you’re having a great week so far ❤️
