In conquering my own struggles with air hunger and panic attacks, I stumbled upon a profound quote from the author of Man's Search for Meaning. This quote has become a source of immense hope for me, unlocking a deep well of potential for change and growth. Through the practice of mindfulness and finding balance in my well-being, I've discovered a beautiful and often spiritual journey.

Acknowledging the space between a stimulus and my reaction can be a humbling experience. However, the awareness of this space allows me to make repairs and adjustments, embracing the idea of connecting to it. This connection, often facilitated by a deeper focus on my breath, which, as a Christian, I see as a link to the holy spirit, has been transformative in my personal wellness journey.

I invite you to reflect on the quoted words. What emotions does it stir within you? Does it resonate with your experiences? I'm curious to hear your perspective if you'd like to share.

For those new here, welcome! I'm Coach Erin, the mind behind Breath Well, Live Well, a 60-Day Private Coaching Program. As an exercise physiologist and wellness coach, I utilize mindful movement, breath work, and somatic experiencing techniques to help clients overcome stress, anxiety, and disordered breathing. This chart explains what Iā€™ve been seeing with my clients. Collectively as a society we are breathing too fast, too much volume.

Do you know your breathing rate?

Check out my video on Breathing Assessments to get an idea of your breathing rate.

Donā€™t scratch the itch. Let me go Physiologist on you for a moment...Ā

Contrary to what you may have heard, when you are #stressed deep breathing is NOT the solution.Ā

Breathing hard with bigger, larger breaths will stimulate the #nervoussystem

Remember the brown paper bag during a panic attack? While I do not suggest this method, there is a valid reason for it.

It is known as rebreathing and the bag over someones mouth is used to help recirculate CO2.

This is because you donā€™t need to breathe MORE oxygen when you are anxious and #hyperventilating you need to breathe LESS oxygen.

Longer, calmer breaths via the exhalation will circulate more CO2 naturally.

This is counterintuitive to what you have been told, I know.Ā

ThinkĀ of it this way, if you get into the habit of overeating and overconsuming anything, your tolerance increases. What satisfied you at one point may not satisfy you anymore. Often you start to want more. The same can happen with your breath especially if you mouth breathe, take large frequent breaths, and yawn often.

CO2 is a ā€œgood guyā€ when you are #panicky

There is aĀ vasodilating effect of CO2.Ā A vasodilator widensĀ blood vessels, which decreases #bloodpressure

Itā€™s important to note that some of us are especially sensitive to low CO2. These individuals, myself included, will tend to increase the rate of breathing aka #overbreathing through a number of ways.Ā

Habitual over breathing and other suboptimal #breathing patterns leadĀ to even lower carbon dioxide levels. It isĀ this feedback loop in brain programming that can make us have air hunger or even a #panicattack

The good news is that you can increase your tolerance to CO2 gradually.

I help #educate my clients whether they are #anxious about an upcoming #publicspeaking opportunity or theyā€™re just dealing with stress in their #wellbeing

Your breath is a powerful tool in #business and #life

If you have symptoms of #airhunger or want to learn more, book a complimentary discovery call.
