Olympic weightlifting requires time to develop a champion

Because #olylifting requires strength and power for the best performance of the snatch and clean and jerk, it makes sense that the best performance comes in the mid-twenties.

This is not to say that being younger or older prevents great lifting performance. For example,

- females tend to peak a bit earlier than males

- lighter-weight classes tend to peak a bit earlier than heavy-weight classes

Why?

The reason is probably related to the time needed to develop the required muscle mass to move particular kilograms on the barbell. To lift heavier weights, more muscle mass will need to be built, and more time spent training to be able to move this enormous weight above the head.

How far are you from your peak performance?

Olympic weightlifting performance will decline with age.

10,225 results from the IWF World Masters Weightlifting Championships 1993-2018 were analyzed to find how much the performance would decline.

In general, weightlifting performance declines similarly in males and females. But between the ages of 45 and 55 females lose more. This is probably related to the menopause.

Agree or disagree?

Focus of attention and snatch performance

Two separate studies investigated how the focus of attention will influence the performance metrics of the snatch:

Study 1:
tested 12 competitive weightlifters on 80% snatch performance in the kinetics of the barbell and the lifter (angles and velocities) under:

- internal (focusing on e.g., moving the elbows high) or

- external focus (focusing on e.g., moving the barbell back and up)

Result: Lifters missed 6% of lifts when focusing externally, and 11% when focusing internally. Greater peak elbow vertical velocity in internal focus and increased peak bar horizontal velocity in external focus were found.

Study 2:
tested 12 highly-skilled international-level weightlifters performing 80% hang power snatches while using:

- external - focus on moving the barbell back and up rapidly

- internal - focus on moving elbows high and to the side rapidly

- holistic - focus on feeling as explosive as possible

- neutral- focus on performing the snatch to the best of their ability

Velocity, power, and displacement were measured.

Results:
No differences in velocity, power, and displacement were found between different focus of attention strategies.

What is your favorite cue to improve snatch performance?

How do you predict your split jerk max?

Split jerk performance is correlated with back squat performance and overhead performance

This relationship was tested in 20 male and 13 female competitive Olympic weightlifters who were tested on their best back squat, best overhead press, and their best split jerk performance.

All three were strongly correlated which means that they likely depend on each other.

How does your actual split jerk max compare to the calculated one?
