I bought a DS for my dad for his birthday, my mom said she wanted one for Christmas the same year. They were smokers at the time and you could always find them sitting on their porch each playing their DS. They were both in their late fifties. They started with rain teasers and bundle games with sudoku and puzzles and moved on to Mario Kart and Zelda. My mom has replayed Ocarina of Time several timesš

Wow, those words hurt, because the 2ds was my first Nintendo handheld and I absolutely love it.

This is a really good collection, but before the Game Boy Color there was also the Game Boy Pocket. This was a slimmed down version of the first Game Boy that required fewer batteries. There was also the Game Boy Light, which is essentially the Game Boy Pocket that had a backlit display and only released in Japan. Game Boy Micro was an interesting release and you can consider it the Game Boy Advance slim.

The DS, and specifically the DS Lite and DSi, was basically my whole childhood as a kid born in 2003. I have so many memories of a thing called Summer School that my local nursery did where kids up to the age of 9 could go there during the day in summer and basically do nothing. There was like me and 2 or 3 other people who consistently brought our DSs and played Mario Kart against each other for hours. I even still sometimes play my DSi XL which was the last DS console I owned just because I love the nostalgia of playing the same games I spent so much of my childhood playing. It's kind of a shame current kids and the next gen of kids aren't gonna have an experience like that. Thanks for the throwback mate!

you missed something very important about why Nintendo DS and DSi were such a success. In poor countries or countries where we couldn't buy or afford buying game cartridges, sellers were offering homebrew cartridges with SD cards where you can download and play roms. this made the sales explode in countries where nintendo traditionally has no presence
