Soft Machine are an English rock band from Canterbury formed in mid-1966, currently consisting of John Marshall (drums), Roy Babbington (bass), John Etheridge (guitar), and Theo Travis (saxophone, flutes, keyboards). As a central band of the Canterbury scene, the group became one of the first British psychedelic acts and later moved into progressive and jazz-rock. Their varying lineups have included prominent former members such as Mike Ratledge (organ, 1966–76), Robert Wyatt (drums & vocals, 1966–71), Kevin Ayers (bass, guitar & vocals, 1966–68), and Hugh Hopper (bass, 1969–1973).

Soft Machine is such a great example of a band that was so perfectly "of their time" and simultaneously "AHEAD of their time"

I actually saw the Soft Machine in the winter of 1968 at the Buffalo, New York War Memorial with a few friends. The group was opening for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. What a memory!!!!!

fun fact: wyatts drum kit is mitch mitchell’s (jimi hendrix’s drummer) drum kit (minus one floor tom), the one that was used to record electric lady land. he had gifted it to him sometime in 1968.

I was given a "test pressing" vinyl of "Soft Machine" in the early 70's - was much appreciated and got me started on the musical journey.

I don't believe any of the tracks played on this video are Virtually. They're playing Out-bloody-rageous, into Wyatt improv, followed by Eamonn Andrews and then finally they end on All White. It's great quality footage in any case and some rare footage of them playing All White with Wyatt. Thanks!

Had an old friend who used to play me this stuff way back in the day. Not many bands like this today. I'm sure these guys could set up anywhere and still create beautiful music like this .

As much as i love John Marshall's powerful and complex drumming there are times when i really miss Robert's more inmediate style behind the kit. I love em' both.

Specifically, this piece is as follows: part of Our Bloody Rageous into Robert Wyatt vocal improv into Eamonn Andrews into All White & probably recorded March 23, 1971 @ Radio Bremen's TV studio

They really did great here, they held such an interesting trio, I love their tone textures I remember listening to their first four albums and the way the instruments would distort it would keep me wondering what instrument was being altered in what way. and here they are keeping the vibe with their soft tones.
