Renaissance - Kings and Queens (1970)

Renaissance are an English progressive rock band, best known for their 1978 UK top 10 hit "Northern Lights" and progressive rock classics like "Carpet of the Sun", "Mother Russia", and "Ashes Are Burning". They developed a unique sound, combining a female lead vocal with a fusion of classical, folk, rock, and jazz influences. Characteristic elements of the Renaissance sound are Annie Haslam's wide vocal range, prominent piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements, vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, synthesiser, and versatile drum work. The band created a significant following in the northeast United States in the 1970s, and that region remains their strongest fan base.

The original line-up included two former members of The Yardbirds, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, along with John Hawken, Louis Cennamo and Relf's sister Jane Relf. They intended to put "something together with more of a classical influence". Renaissance was born, and the band released a studio album in 1969, and another in 1971. Subsequently, John Tout replaced Hawken on keyboards, followed by a period of high turnover of musicians until the "classic line-up" of Haslam, John Tout, Michael Dunford, Jon Camp, and Terry Sullivan was established, although none of them were in the original band. They were assisted with lyrics on many songs from Cornish poet Betty Thatcher-Newsinger. From 1972 to 1979 Renaissance released seven successful studio albums, toured extensively, and sold out three nights in a row at Carnegie Hall with Tony Cox conducting the New York Philharmonic.

I was fortunate enough to see them in Chicago back in the early 70’s. Small, intimate venue allowed the listener the opportunity to really hear the shear talent of every band member.

Still stands the test of time, a masterpiece then and now!

I was fifteen in 1969 when both Renaissance and Steeleye Span formed. I loved them both and now, at the age of 69, I still find myself humming their music when I least expect it. We, as a people, tend to idolize and exalt Baroque and Classical composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. These groups that fused Classical, Baroque and English Folk music with 'rock' should be held in the same high regard.

Thanks to Beat Club for maintaining their archives and making such incredible sights and sounds---fantastic historical documents--accessible to all. This is an impressive feat and important work.

Wow! I'm a huge Renaissance fan, but I've never seen the original line-up live before. Thanks!

High quality recording. Great to see Keith Relf performing. We lost him way too early.

I love this. It combines the utter ridiculousness with the very very cool. Prog in a nutshell and 1970 to boot.

I sent Annie an email last year saying how much I enjoyed her music back in the 70's. Never expected a reply but I got a simple email thanking me.

in case anyone wonders what "progressive rock" is. This is a prime example...not just a song, a journey

A very talented band with some very very good musicians, Keith Relf (great harmonica player) and his sister on vocals, Louis Cennamo on bass, McArty on drums and the very talented John Hawken on piano, all the men had paid their dues with many important bands in the sixties music scene, I saw them at a gig at the Dagenham Roundhouse, ( The village blues club ) they were excellent and quite powerful live.

Fantastic. One of my favorite bands. And still cant decide which line-up is better for me. But, after watching this masterpiece, i think the first line-up had something otherworldly beautiful with it. thank you so much.

Oh my word! This is amazing. Only the second Renaissance song I've ever heard (just finished listening to "Carpet of the Sun"). Brand new fan of Renassance. Looking forward to the journey.
