My mom and I have often told each other, in times of intense uncertainty and stress, "Don't worry, it will all work out, it always does," and it generally does work out. We do this as a way to relinquish anxiety about things we can't control so we can move forward. It helps us have the courage to move on in the face of uncertainty, not manifest vacations in tropical locations.

It’s so toxic because there’s nothing wrong with thinking positive thoughts/doing things that make you feel hopeful, but you can’t get so obsessed with ~manifesting~ that you make yourself feel like it’s your fault when things don’t always fall into place, or that people who have a hard time deserve it.

Red car theory is also really similar. If you focus on red cars, there are a lot of red cars. If you focus on being lucky, you suddenly see really small lucky things that you wouldn't have noticed previously.

My biggest issue with the theory (?) of the power of attraction, which I believe Lucky Girl to be...is the effect it has on those with unfortunate circumstances. Did the cancer or heart patient not have the right mindset? Are we to bear guilt of our misfortunes because we didn't want good fortune bad enough?

It is literally impossible to remain happy all the time and be positive all the time it's just not realistic we are not machines

As someone who’s been accused of having lucky girl syndrome, I agree when you say it negates the hard work behind your accomplishments.

It's "The Secret" repackaged. This manifestation stuff is completely ridiculous and seems to recycle in some form every couple of years.

There's a real hubris in believing that everything you want, at whatever stage you are in your life, is what is actually the best thing for you just because you wanted it.

19:48 how did this girl who said she was sick of struggling financially suddenly afford her dream apartment, open a clothing store, and have the funds to start traveling???

Honestly, there is merit in reframing your experiences into a positive and cultivating gratitude for when small things go your way. I bet if the restaurant those girls went to was closed, they would have found something else to eat and found a reason that “everything works out for me.” Additionally, not worrying about things you CAN’T control can reduce distress. Can it be toxic? Absolutely. If you’re so positive that you can’t recognize you’re in a bad situation, that’s dangerous. All things in balance ❤

I feel like Lucky Girl Syndrome in some of these cases can actually be attributed to Rich Girl Syndrome and Nepo Baby Syndrome. They're just in denial.

The idea of manifestation ended up sending me spiralling from OCD recently! While homeless, I got really fixated on this idea that if I was too hopeful about something I’d lose out and be really disappointed, but if I wasn’t hopeful enough I’d be manifesting bad energy and lose out because of that - it was an absolutely horrific spiral and triggered by a friend who posts a lot of this positive mindset manifestation stuff

What saddens me is that the Law of Attraction (what the Lucky Girl Syndrome is based on) does work when understood and done properly, but it's been oversimplified and sold as something ridiculous. At its core, it's simply some form of self-hypnosis that shifts your limiting beliefs and reduces your tendency to self-sabotage. Because unconsciously, we only accept opportunities that we feel we're worthy of. That's why you often see people ruining promising relationships because they don't feel they're worthy of being happy. Or they believe that "relationships are hard work'. LOA is also related to concepts like the placebo effect, mirror neurons, etc. I've used it a lot to build my self worth and it's worked great. But obviously, it's only an addition to concrete actions and deep self work.

It's this same mindset that is used against people with disabilities particularly those with invisible disablilties that if we thought more positively then our illnesses would go away. We are blamed for our disabilities because we have a "negative" attitude when in reality we are exhausted and resentful of navigating an ableist and inaccessible world that finds us expendable because of our inability to generate capital at the same level as abled people.

As my dad told me “the harder you work, the luckier you get.” It’s always easy to look from the outside and miss all the hard work done by someone else.

I am the luckiest woman, but it all was because of hard work, failing, and trying again, and never stop loving my friends and family who help me day in and out!
