My mom and I have often told each other, in times of intense uncertainty and stress, "Don't worry, it will all work out, it always does," and it generally does work out. We do this as a way to relinquish anxiety about things we can't control so we can move forward. It helps us have the courage to move on in the face of uncertainty, not manifest vacations in tropical locations.

It’s so toxic because there’s nothing wrong with thinking positive thoughts/doing things that make you feel hopeful, but you can’t get so obsessed with ~manifesting~ that you make yourself feel like it’s your fault when things don’t always fall into place, or that people who have a hard time deserve it.

One thing about these mindsets like lucky girl syndrome and law of attraction that really gets me is: what do they think happens when two people’s desired outcomes are in direct conflict? What if two people who are trying to get the same job or apartment both tell themselves that they’re so lucky and they’ll get what they want? What decides which person’s “luck” is more important? Major loophole in my opinion

My biggest issue with the theory (?) of the power of attraction, which I believe Lucky Girl to be...is the effect it has on those with unfortunate circumstances. Did the cancer or heart patient not have the right mindset? Are we to bear guilt of our misfortunes because we didn't want good fortune bad enough?

Honestly, there is merit in reframing your experiences into a positive and cultivating gratitude for when small things go your way. I bet if the restaurant those girls went to was closed, they would have found something else to eat and found a reason that “everything works out for me.” Additionally, not worrying about things you CAN’T control can reduce distress.
Can it be toxic? Absolutely. If you’re so positive that you can’t recognize you’re in a bad situation, that’s dangerous.
All things in balance ❤

It's this same mindset that is used against people with disabilities particularly those with invisible disablilties that if we thought more positively then our illnesses would go away. We are blamed for our disabilities because we have a "negative" attitude when in reality we are exhausted and resentful of navigating an ableist and inaccessible world that finds us expendable because of our inability to generate capital at the same level as abled people.

I'm going to start calling myself a Lucky Girl. I got my rent-controlled apartment because a friend worked for the company that owns my building. 15 years later I got laid off from my job. I told my landlord I would be out of town for two weeks and she asked why. Five minutes later she offered me a full time job. I'm now the bookkeeper for the company. My commute is about 30 seconds. So the luck has taken nearly two decades 😂

4:38 this made me think of one of my favorite quotes by Sir Terry Pratchett from The Wee Free Men: "If you trust in yourself... and believe in your dreams... and follow your star... you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy."
