at the start of my 1st year at uni. i was introduced to this song and it got me through 4 years of really bad depression. i wish university would have been different as i had been looking forward to it for so long, but instead it was one of the darkest and traumatic periods of my life. i'm about to graduate in june-well virtually? and today i woke up thinking with a sense of calmness that I may not have had the university life i dreamed of, but i'm going to be okay. i never realized how much the strokes have raised me. i will forever be grateful to this band for carrying me through some of the most intense experiences of my life. they were all i listened to when i moved to korea for a year. they're all i really listen to honestly.

So many fish there in the sea
I wanted you, you wanted me
That's just a phase, it's got to pass
I was a train moving too fast
Didn't understand what to see
Yeah, then I got a different view
It you, no
Wait, I'm not gonna give it a break
I'm not your friend
I never was
I said wait, I'm not gonna give it a break
I'm not your friend
I never was, no
So many fish there in the sea
She wanted him, he wanted me
That's just a phase, it's got to pass
I was a train moving too fast
Yeah, I know you warned me
But this is too important
Now I got a different view
It's you
Why can't you wait? I'm not gonna give it a break
I'm not your friend
I never was
I said, wait, I'm not gonna give it a break
I'm not your friend
I never was

here you can see a good example of a band that utilizes the bass correctly

Having the guitar start on sharp downbeats, then once the band kicks in, the same guitar part suddenly reframed as ska-esque upbeats, is a simple but brilliant bit of musical 'gotcha'. As is letting the chorus revolve around the less-is-more "I'm not your friend / I never was." Out of all the attempts at acidic put-downs in rock lyrics, the straightforward finality of that line ends up being more devastating than anything more obviously "mean".

This song brings me such a nostalgia.. I remember the time I still was in school... omg, time flies.. I have the weirdest feeling right now! I suddenly realized life Is just one thing. There's no such a thing as past, future... EVERYTHING IS PRESENT!!! I feel soooo weird! I just realized that the myself of today is the same girl of ten years ago. Now I want to go back to when I still didn't have real things to worry about, just school... I feel like crying. WTF. How can a song do something like that???
