I went through the hardest breakup of my life this past Valentine’s Day. Me and this kind-hearted girl dated for a year and 3 months. I told God when we started dating that I loved her too much to ask Him for approval. The last few weeks, right before she broke up with me, I prayed to God about how I wanted to be closer to Him. I did this many days. I felt torn between my desire to grow closer to God and my desire for her and our relationship to work out. I knew we were spiritually dissonant. We both had similar upbringings, grew up in a strict Christian home, all that fun stuff. But I knew there were many differences we had when it came to our friends. When it came to what my convictions and longings were and what hers were. We never had sex but I definitely didn’t keep things pure in our relationship though. Eventually I knew that I couldn’t keep letting her be the only one to satisfy me. Relying on her for my joy and happiness was slowly failing me more and more. She was the most beautiful girl I ever met and we had so much chemistry. This girl loved some awesome music, we even started a vinyl collection together. She told me on Valentine’s Day that she wasn’t even planning to break up that day. I knew things weren’t going well between us for a while though. The transparency and honesty our relationship had was a distant memory to me. She broke up with me and told me that she needed to grow and that I needed to grow too. I felt like God was telling me in that moment that this was my opportunity to grow in Him. Thank you Lord for all you have done for me! Guys! This was the roughest time of my life. I am 21 years old and I never felt so broken and hopeless about my future as I did that night. I got on my hands and knees and cried out to God when I got back home. I got in my car and put on worship songs. I sang them out to God. Even when I could barely speak as I was crying. I kept praising His name. He is there for you and he is always faithful. I love God so much! He has been there for me through it all. The Bible says in Psalm 34:18 that The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. When you are truly empty and you cry out to God it is amazing how much He can fill you up. I found Sarah Reeves’ album Easy Never Needed You and listened to all of it over that next week. This song spoke so much to me! Every word in every song on that album spoke to me and it all was right in line with how I felt and my heart’s longing to be loved and known by God. The one true desire of every human is to be fully known and fully loved. Only God can fulfill this! Thank you God for being with me through the hills and valleys! Thank you Sarah Reeves for writing such wonderful love songs to our incredible savior.
