The pronunciation is disputed, yes. One of the creators said he only picked the name because he liked the way it sounded.
As kids we said GRAY-dee-us, Japan and Shmup Junkie say GRAH-dee-us, while the fourth and fifth games vocalize it as GRADD-ee-us, same as you say in this video.
One thing I'll always give this game, though: The options screen uses Konami Morning Music, the greatest game tune you've never heard.

Cool beans. :) This is one of the only Gradius games I haven’t tried yet and I’m consistently impressed by the way series can make it feel worth it to play through difficult sections over and over again to beat them when so many other games that tried the same thing just end up feeling frustrating.

Your comment at 1:02 gave me an idea for a tagline for the GBA Gradius. "Same ship. New console" :D

0:59 Gradius Galaxies: Same ship, different day

Gradius Galaxies on the GBA is awesome! It gets overlooked because It's on a handheld. If you like Shoot 'em ups, you'll love Gradius Galaxies. It's the second Gradius to get overlooked. The first is Gradius gaiden on the PS1. It's one of the best Gradius games ever made! Check it out...Anyway, love your show, I watch every video you put up on YouTube. I only wish they were longer.😊

Yes, Gradius has an actual story. There's actually an anime from the 1980's, made by Konami themselves called "Salamander OVA", based off the Life Force (Salamander) series of Gradius games. Highly recommend.
