If you manage to read the fragments of Sappho as anything but gay, you really are in denial. Sappho is an icon today and was an icon in ancient times. She was an influential mastermind BECAUSE of her inclusive and sexually open poetry. I always try hard to keep to the academic sources, ensuring I don't tell you guys too many of my personal opinions (mainly because I don't want you to think every classicist thinks the way I do - such thoughts are just my own), but I really could not hold back from talking about Sappho as being a lesbian figurehead. I mean COME ON: SHE IS LITERALLY THE REASON WE HAVE THE WORD LESBIAN.
