I fk with both of their music. I strongly recall ppl calling J Cole 'boring' when it came to his solo work before his big 'feature run'.

Kendrick is 4/4 on great albums in those 12 years. Quantity over quality has to count for something. Just cause drake and Cole shit out albums non stop doesnā€™t mean they are any good.

This album is the epitome of hip-hop. There is no need to defend it. You donā€™t have to enjoy it but if you cannot recognise its masterpiece you not know what youā€™re talking about

I don't think there's even a need to defend Kendrick's discography, it speaks for itself. For me Cole's response seems weak, rushed and unsubstantiated.

Iā€™m a big fan of both; theyā€™re in my Top 5 most played along with Nas, Pac, and Ice Cube. However, Iā€™ve noticed people arenā€™t being genuine with their analysis or reception of performances by either artist. Kendrickā€™s feature was a solid 8/10 with high octane delivery and served as an impactful moment. He had maybe 1-2 lines aimed at Cole. Coleā€™s track was a 7/10 with a solid 2nd effort and had far more lines aimed at Kendrick. Itā€™s easier to shoot 100% when you take 2 jumpers. In short, nobody should be marking a winner for a non-existent battle. This is just the ā€œwarm-upā€ and honestly Cole has multiple tracks on this mixtape with 8-9 of 10 level performances. Letā€™s focus on those, I think they will have career years in ā€˜24 and it puts into perspective how weak the field is because this is the only era where weā€™ve had the same ā€œTop 3ā€ in terms of impact and performance for over a decade.

Idk if perhaps there are a lot of new Kendrick fans since Damn. But I remember clearly the polarizing nature of Pimp. I personally love it and think itā€™s his best work. But it def doesnā€™t blend accessibility with conscious as well as Good Kid or Damn (you could argue that tape perfected it) I even think Kendrick had to end the Pimp tour early or retired those songs So while calling it sleepy doesnā€™t seem right to me. I def remember that sentiment was heavy during the Pimp era

To pimp a butterfly was Kendrickā€™s 3rd album. Section 80 was his first(not a mixtape) people are loud and wrong
