Convocations, the new instrumental album from Sufjan Stevens, moves like a two-and-a-half-hour electronic/ambient mass for our present age of anxiety and dread; its 49 tracks work through the stages of grief and gladness with emotional mood music that is dreamy, dissonant, vertiginous, rhythmic, repetitive, urgent, and calm—that is, all the things we undergo when we inevitably live through isolation, uncertainty, and loss. Its five sonic cycles (Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations, and Incantations) replicate different stages of mourning, healing and catharsis, working both to soothe our unease while savoring a renewed sense of awe and wonder for being alive in these unprecedented times.

Stevens initiated Convocations in response to (and as an homage to) the life and death of his father, who died in September last year, two days following the release of The Ascension. It is, then, ultimately an album about death, and an album that reflects a year in which we have all lost so much. That said, this is not a personal record, but a universal one. Convocations is built on a shared experience that seeks to be honest about how complicated grief can be in these difficult times—the pain and separation, the anxiety, the unknown, the absolute joy of memory. This is also an album made in lockdown, when we were all cloistered in whatever space we had. Convocations arrives just as we begin to emerge from a year whose losses we will calculate for a lifetime. It is, then, right on time, as we begin to process our grief and try to carry on with it.

i can imagine it clearly, the visuals displayed on the wall by a projector, the soft yet edgy sounds in my house, me laying on a carefully-picked carpet for hours, staring at the colors in motion, thoughts in my mind moving in all directions, an infinite melody of a small existence

Usually I don't care for background music like this, but Lamentations VI is emotionally resonant for some reason. It sounds like someone's soul toiling away, working towards a distant epiphany, but for now just pulling a crank over and over to keep the machine running.

These sounds remind me of my childhood when I imagined UFO landing in my parent's backyard and I needed the ticket to enter the flying saucer and fly away with aliens. Great music, Sufjan! Thank you for another masterpiece! Postbaroque.

Interesting concept from Sufjan and i wonder how it will be taken to by usual fans as i think it's overtly different from his usual style. I'm not sure this concept album is aurally my cup of tea, but i'm an electronica nerd and quite picky. For me, having lost my own father when i was 16, i feel if creating this and releasing it provides Sufjan with catharsis and offers it to others in these challenging times, that matters more than my personal taste and i hope he has been able to use this creationnas part of a process of coming to terms with loss - which includes feeling it, and for me was a work that not only took many years but is something you continue to relate to as you change as a person. Certainly missed my dad very much during the pandemic, and it's been aeons. There are always new things i wish i could ask him. But listening to this, i think i am at a different stage. I feel for Sufjan however. Sufjan, if you can see this, i wish you the best ♥ and the same for anyone who can relate. If you need someone to talk to, i am here. Hang in there yall.

This began differently than what i thought was a full album of similar length composed of different tracks. Mildly confused but that's ok
