Check this out: try singing the lyrics of Chicago over the outro of the So You Are Tired. Pretty cool, right? For much of the song, Sufjan uses same chord progression (I-v-bVII-IV). He also uses it at the end of The Transfiguration. Both Chicago and The Transfiguration are about expansiveness, and moving on to the next stage after mistakes and hardships. Though the lyrics of So You Are Tired are devastating, the harmonies suggest that this is but one part of life, and a glorious part of the human experience.

The chorus… it sounds like anguished sadness. Those moments that, especially in the earlier stages of heartbreak, leave you on your hands and knees. You’re violently grieving. Tears are just raining. You leave behind a literal puddle as you watch snot hang half a foot from your nose. It really feels like those deeply painful moments.
