Being surrounded by the optimism inspired by a new year can also inspire us to overwhelm ourselves with an excessive number of resolutions and goals in the hopes of becoming a “new and improved” version of ourselves. But if we’re not actually ready to make drastic changes... it’s unlikely that we’ll be successful. So why do we keep setting ourselves up for failure year after year, knowing the anxiety that lies ahead? Let’s unpack this annual tradition, why it often sparks an existential crisis, and how to find ways to stay positive while we reinvent ourselves.

Happy New Year from all of us at The Take! While many of us are giving up on more over the top resolutions, there's one group of people that are laying out ultra-ambitious plans and sticking to them no matter what: the annoying overachievers. Don't miss our video on that trope: https://youtu.be/bVHGAWBI4z8

The best thing I did for myself each NYE was repeating my goals. And by repeating, i mean, i repeat the goal of taking a month long break from social media and alchol. I've been doing that for 4 years now, and it works each time. I feel accomplished, and these goals are manageable

I think it's fine to have New Year Resolutions. The start of a new season can be really motivating and I see nothing wrong with taking advantage of that. But I think people need to stop applying the "try again next year" principle when they start failing at the goals they set. Like, feeling tired and discouraged is okay, and I don't think there's anything wrong with letting go for a while. But you don't need to wait until January to try again. You can also adjust your goals if you realized you've bitten off more than you can choose. It should be an ongoing process. Not a once a year thing.

I live by the moon, and create new goals and intentions on the New Moon, throughout the year. Honoring a cyclical cycle allows you to keep coming back to yourself and checking in every month, without putting pressure on yourself when December 31st/Jan 1 approaches. The first New Moon of the year is January 11th. 🌚✨

I decided on 3 resolutions this year and 2 of them are expanding on improvements I already started half way into 2023. They feel much more attainable

I broke my goals down into categories and quarters. I'll break them down into months as january progresses and I see what my pace is. Having goals with specific motivations (so they're either things i want to do, or want to Be Able to do) will work for me,

True change takes a long time and most people go the instant gratification route.

I support self-improvement but I don't think New Year's Resolutions are nessecary to do that, like I've been trying to improve myself for the last whole year.

I like making resolutions each year but I learned to not make them vague, I am as specific as I can and I also start small.

My resolution: Don't chase the validation and approval of others.

My attitude towards the new year is that it’s literally just the next day. I’m not going to magically become a ‘new me’. A If I’m going to change something I will make it happen whenever I want to regardless of the time of the year.

I always have new year goals. Mostly all come true. It is not just to say you want something or set a goal. You have to work for it. It needs dedication. Some may not come true that year, but you took the steps to actually do them, and roll them over for the next year. It's a work in process. And yes, everyone should set goals for the year, but also ride the wave. It's balance.

Always thought that tradition was odd and never took part in it. In the past new year was just another reason to have fun, but it felt more like year started in september with school. It's not like I never been like: "Ok! Now I'm changing my life!", it just has never been due to new year, just occasional inspiration. As an adult when I find myself unsatisfied with my life, I think how I can realistically start to change things and me. May be I've just never made a life summary of the year, and never was off my usual stuff cause of celebration. I've never overeaten during holidays, since my family traditional dishes...let's say not to my taste. This year I'm happy, that all relatives are gone to holiday trip and I'm home, they gave me cats. Accidentally it made me actually start to do something. I am overcoming my burnout, started to really exercise, I am cleaning apartment. May be my resolution would be to get a well-payed job and find a new apartment with no neighbors who are related to me and annoying. And get more cats. Cats = happiness.

Every time someone asks me about New Year’s resolutions I answer “I’m going to be the same person tomorrow that I was yesterday, and I’ll continue reaching for my goals as I’ve been doing all year”

Man, my new year's resolutions, are usually just materialistic (thinking about what movies/tv shows on dvd& blu-ray to get next, truth be told, what/which ones get the out of print axe really doesn't help with the choices)
