Another night, another patrol that seemed to span out endlessly. His eyes glowed comfortingly in the dim light of the corridor he had found himself in, each rhythmic beat of his footsteps reverbing faintly from the ground into his main processors. He could hear the rain spattering on the roof and window panes in a syncopated cluster of staccato taps, sending a calm feeling washing over his chassis, the virus he and his friends had suffered from long forgotten, even if it was just for the moment. Moondrop remained silent, in tune with the otherwise gloomy weather outside, allowing a synthetic sigh to escape him as he paused just for a minute to admire one of the moving posters on the wall. Sure, he'd seen it before, but it wouldn't do any harm to take a second to look, would it? Optics flickering over every detail, Moondrop saved it in his memory banks, ready to resume his patrol again, when he could feel something next to him. Turning around, he could see the shadow following him. A young girl, only about 7 or 8 years of age, with pigtails tied in blue ribbons and a flowing blue dress with a crisp white pinafore, white socks and shiny blue shoes all buckled up nicely. Her hair and skirt flowed as if being blown faintly by invisible wind, her dark eyes large with childlike wonder. He had seen her before, mainly in the daycare when all was dark; she was quite a timid little thing, which is why he was so surprised to see her out of the confines of the daycare and floating next to him in the hall. "Everything alright, Evelyn?" he asked, his voice as soft as the rain outside. The girl didn't respond verbally, but gave a nod, as she tentatively fidgeted with the hem of her pinafore. Something was amiss, even for a young spirit such as her. "Were you looking for me?" Moondrop asked, lightly tilting his head. Again, another nod. "Tell you what," he started, the bell on his hat jingling as he moved to face the corridor he was walking down before, "why don't you be my little helper tonight, and come with me? would you like that?" The girl nodded again, a smile on her face, as she slipped a small, delicate, ghostly hand into Moondrop's mechanical hand, which dwarfed her ethereal digits. With a small smile, Moondrop walked with Evelyn down the hallway, her glowing body and his eyes lighting the way. All the while, the rain kept falling.
