When BET launched 30 years ago, it was the only channel of it’s kind...that is a network that catered to black viewers. Since then, BET has been a staple on cable tv -- known for its memorable awards show and original programming like ComicView and Teen Summitt AND it’s shoddy productions and less than positive portrayals of the black community, the channel has faced the ups and downs of controversy and success over the last three decades.

BET hasn't been the same since Viacom bought it

It's hard to believe there was once a time when BET actually did entertain black people. But since the late 90's, they've just become another in a long line of minstrel-fests, or to quote The Boondocks, Black Exploitation Television.

BET needs to start making more originals like The New Edition/Bobby Brown Story instead of just pumping out Tyler Perry's trash and reruns of Waist Deep and You got SERVED. They should invest in their own Historical epics like Toussaint's Louverture and the Haiti Revolution, musicals that celebrate black Culture that harken back to the Peak of the New Jack Swing era or the glory Days of Motown Records, Martial Arts movies that blew up in the black community after ENTER THE DRAGON,and support Black Anime creators that are starting to emerge more and more and maybe make our own version of Dragon Ball,Attack on Titan Etc.

I used to love to watch Rap City back in the 1990s. Just like other cable channels they did an channel drift like the infamous rural purge of 1970-71.

The first time I watched BET was 1988. I only watched it because of the music videos. Rap City was awesome to watch with different MC's & DJ's hosting an episode. Sometime after the 90's, it later went down the toilet.

This video is mostly the truth. the quality of music we have today doesn't help. Might be too late to swing it back like it was. or have a classic music show giving light to some of the great music and artists of the past. or a show on how not to get burned in the music industry. a show on music production. interviews with music giants. but i'm just wishing. something like that won't happen.

Unpopular Opinion: I love BET new original scripted programming like Boomerang, Tales, The Oval, and Sistas. I'm glad BET is giving Black and Brown Actors and Actres a chance.

It seems that going low brow was equated to going low budget. One of the challenges of doing television is getting and sustaining high quality content. It costs money and there's a risk that the desirable demographic ( 18-34 ) will not necessarily be there.
