A tune written circa 1991/92. I wanted to see if I could distil 1,000 pages of Lord of the Rings into a 5 minute song! (No epic film trilogy back then!)
This version was recorded at a music workshop that I attended with my friend Daniel - I played the drums, freestyle with my fingers on a midi keyboard and played all the keyboard parts. Daniel took on guitar and vocal duties and played the bass parts, at the workshop leader's request, by turning the bass eq on his guitar flat out and playing the bass part on his usual guitar which gave the track a real "indie" feel.
This song has a special place in my heart, not only being one of the first times I got to hear my ideas come to life through a nice recording but spending a great day with a friend, planning and recording and creating. Daniel has such a warm, relaxed vocal style and I never managed to capture the special atmosphere he gives this song in any of my other versions of it.
I think he totally nailed the "wide-eyed wonder" and innocence of Frodo's character whilst at the same time keeping a sense of quiet but steely inner strength. Also, if I remember correctly it was the first time he had ever played a guitar solo as such and again created this simple, clear, straightforward statement that so perfectly fits the song. Really lovely coherent shape to it that leads the ear exactly where it needs to go to finish the "story"!
Awesome job Daniel!
