In this lesson, you will learn what the study of chemistry entails, why chemistry is important, and the basic ideas studied in any introduction to chemistry. We describe chemistry as the study of matter and the chemical rearrangement of atoms in a chemical reaction. In chemistry, reactants are mixed together and products are formed. The products are formed as a result of the atoms in the reactants transferring or sharing electrons, and rearranging the order of the atoms and how the atoms are bonded. Chemical bonds are broken in the reactants, and bonds are formed in the products. In chemistry, we want to understand how these reactions occur, and we learn how to calculate how much product will form. We are also interested in how these reactions occur in aqueous (water) solution, as this is central in many chemical reactions. We also study the electron configuration of the atoms, gas laws including the ideal gas law, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, and more..

Sir, as an older woman who found Chemistry to be impossible when I was at school, I thank you for this!

I've been failing chemistry for years, but God... The way you explain it just makes it so much simpler. I'm starting to genuinely see the joy in learning things for the sake of just knowing them. Thanks for that.

I love how you actually explain stuff instead of just shoving information into students' heads. I think that turns many students off about learning chemistry, since they're not understanding any of it and are just blindly memorising and accepting that things happen the way they do, without aksing why. If those students had you as a teacher, they'd be a much more interested in chemistry, as they'll understand that it's how we as a species study matter and the universe, and is not just a bunch of stuff to be memorised! Keep going, you're amazing <3

I wish this guy was my teacher 😢he is so amazing & the best explainer. This guy is soooo smart - worked for NASA yet actually cares about teaching in every way without making me feel dumb- yet dumbing it down in a good pace and proper motivational way. Nice writing too on top of it. Thank you for changing my life ❤

The way you teach is wonderful. As a faculty member of intensive care in medical university I am so proud of myself that I am learning a lot from your lectures in my 56th year of life. So many thanks.

This is an excellent example of good teaching. Not all instructors have the ability to truly convey what they know, but you are one of the best!

Fantastic, thank you so much for this. Finally a series on chemistry that covers everything. Even those of us with prior dabbling into courses need a refresher

I am studying Nursing and the fundamentals of electrolytes in our bodies for maintaining life and you have just bridged my understanding of how these two concepts are so important. Thank you!! I have watched sooo many videos on the fundamentals of chemistry, and your approach is right on the money, I have lost count of how many light bulb moments I had watching this video!!

Please post more chemistry videos; even if they’re not as popular as the math videos! This is what I needed as a kid in the ‘80’s, but none of my teachers made it accessible to understand like you do. Keep up the great work and service your providing!

I recently fumbled through a Biochemistry course. It was quite difficult for me since I had completely forgotten the fundamentals of general chemistry. Looking forward to working “backwards “with you , crawling after my walking ! Even just this 1 st lesson has cleared up a lot of things that I had just memorized for biochemistry. Can’t wait for next lesson . Please keep making these videos! You are a very talented teacher

You are a great teacher. I hated math when in school now as a retired individual, with experience, learning has become fun and you are making it fascinating. Thank you.

I have watched this presentation twice . The earlier and the current version . Your attention to detail does not vary . You are passionate and teaching, inspiring . I guess that is my reasoning to continue on your series for my own interest . Other teachers I have had in the past didn't motivate me .
