Why we are addicted to stress by Gabor Mate #gabormate #stress #trauma #addiction

Gabor Maté, a renowned Canadian physician and addiction expert, has developed a compelling perspective on the pervasive role of stress in our lives, suggesting that we are, in essence, addicted to stress. Through his extensive work with individuals facing various forms of addiction, Maté has observed a common thread: the pursuit of stress as a coping mechanism. According to Maté, the human brain is wired to seek out stimulation, and in the absence of healthy sources, individuals may turn to stress-inducing activities and situations to fulfill this need. Whether it's the adrenaline rush of a tight deadline, the constant pressure of modern life, or the internalized stress from unresolved trauma, Maté argues that our society has become deeply entrenched in a cycle of stress-seeking behavior.

Maté's teachings emphasize the importance of understanding the root causes of stress addiction and exploring healthier alternatives for coping and fulfillment. By addressing underlying emotional and psychological needs, individuals can break free from the harmful cycle of chronic stress and its associated consequences. Maté's work serves as a powerful reminder to reevaluate societal norms and personal habits, encouraging a shift towards a more compassionate and balanced approach to well-being that prioritizes genuine connection, self-awareness, and resilience in the face of life's challenges.

The power of words to control our emotions can be therapeutic to our mental health;

✅ “You are not alone.”
✅ “You are worthy and deserving.”
✅ “You don't have to apologize.”
✅ “There is treatment available to you
”
✅ “You are strong!.”

" We must be willing to encounter darkness and despair when they come up and face them, over and over again if need be, without running away or numbing ourselves in the thousands of ways we conjure up to avoid the unavoidable". - By Jon Kabat-Zinn

There is only one way to cure addiction. It's your failing. You must not let yourself consume. You cannot change the world, you cannot change your tragic past, people will not become so pleasant every day is a dream. Addiction is not a disease. It is a choice. You chose to use because you do not want boredom (Newsflash, life is boring) and you do not want withdrawl from a chemical or behaviour YOU started. People are lazy, they want to blame something and go use. Victims. If you say you have no agency, that addiction is forced upon you by an external force, then you can never have agency to stop using. Late at night, when your sponser is asleep, when it's just you, only you can stop you from using. Because you chose to use. Rich people with easy lives get addicted to heroin just like people who were abused and poor. Therapists can't sell "you did this to yourself" so they sell "you poor abused thing who were colonized, we shall, as a society atone for this and make life better for you and least acknowledge your unique pain" I beat addiction to many things despite a crappy childhood, I took did it with willpower alone after spending decades as a victim waiting for someone to come save me.
