I think the thing that irks me the most about the modern-day internet is how bland and generic most websites look.

Nico Nico Douga (although much more popular in Japan) is also an old social media site that was a huge hit back then, Touhou wouldn't become a cult classic if it weren't for the reuploads to YouTube. The reuploads even helped globalize some popular memes like Gachimuchi and Ran Ran Ruu. Nowadays became mostly barren due to YouTube taking its place, and its English division got its plug pulled around the late 2010s.
Still, it (alongside 4chan, which was originally an anime-focused website before it became the wild controversial site that it eventually morphed into) helped open the cultural floodgate between Japanese and western users.

What i miss about the old internet was the decentralized nature of it all.
Yes, crossovers and website rivalries were always a thing, but it was remarkably easier to genuinely have your own slice on the internet dedicated to your specific niche.
