About Ron's personality, yeah the movies did him dirty by continually Flanderizing his character.
If you pay attention, the books are actually mystery novels set in a fantasy world. Harry is the detective who gets the puzzle to click, Hermione is the book-smart heart of the trio who supplies trivial knowledge, and Ron is the street-smart lancer who knows all the right contacts. Ron is able to make connections that escape Harry and Hermione because he was raised in a wizard household, and since his dad works in the Ministry he knows all the juicy rumors floating around the wizarding community.
The movies gave all his "aha!" moments to Hermione to make her the archetypal smart character, and reduced Ron to the loyal dumb muscle.

If you think about it, is insane how much stuff they have to cram into two hours or so in the later Harry Potter movies. The sixth book had the origin of Voldemort, the plot to kill Dumbledore, the clout-chasing shennanigans of Slughorn, Ron's love life, the mystery of what the deal is with the Half-Blood Prince, the side-quests with the liquid luck, the other side-quest to get Salazar Slytheryn's necklace. I was watching the runtime of Alex video and thinking "Damn! We're at the 15-minute mark and there's still three more climaxes before the movie ends"

The best scene from half blood prince book.
“Pathetic, Weasley,” said Snape, after a while. “Here — let me
show you —”
He turned his wand on Harry so fast that Harry reacted instinctively; all thought of nonverbal spells forgotten, he yelled, “Protego!”
His Shield Charm was so strong Snape was knocked off-balance
and hit a desk. The whole class had looked around and now
watched as Snape righted himself, scowling.
“Do you remember me telling you we are practicing nonverbal
spells, Potter?”
“Yes,” said Harry stiffly.
“Yes, sir.”
“There’s no need to call me ‘sir,’ Professor.”
The words had escaped him before he knew what he was saying.
Several people gasped, including Hermione. Behind Snape, however, Ron, Dean, and Seamus grinned appreciatively.

The luck potion doesn't actually work the way it's described. It just makes the drinker more confident, like alcohol but without the stumbling and slurring. Also, the drinker can build a tolerance to it if consumed frequently. But also, can still die and when you're too confident, you put yourself in danger more often. And no, Rowling didn't retcon it on Twitter. Dumbledore explains this in the book.

The Half-Blood Prince was my favorite book of the Harry Potter novels because it finally gave us all this backstory on Severus Snape and Voldemort, and being a huge Snape fan I was looking forward to the movie adaptation... until I watched it and saw the movie had left out abut 80% of the Snape content and made a slide show out of the rest. The irony that both Severus and Tom Riddle were "Half-Bloods" with Muggle fathers and both were powerful Wizards yet Voldemort was always going on about how "Pure-Blood Wizards" were supposedly superior, how shitty James Potter's gang had treated Snape because Snape was a) poor as dirt, b) a scholarship boy, and c) a Half-Blood (well done, James Potter!). How Snape's mother had come from a pure-blooded wizarding family but was the last of her family and impoverished and destitute and married to an abuse man who mistreated her and Severus but she couldn't defend herself and her son because her wand had been taken away by the Ministery of Magic. How Severus became a Death-Eater because basically (like many relifious cults or radical movements do to draw in recruits) they welcomed him and pretended to offer him community. And how Snape came to see Dumbledore as a replacement father (just as Harry later would) but Dumbledore basically just used him as a convenient spy to infiltrate the Death-Eaters.
Nope, chuck most of that out and concentrate on the teen romance, movie script writers.
