I think the symbolism behind him driving around in a car, is that he is moving forward but still carrying her becouse she is sitting in the back seat. With him continually looking in the rear view mirror is symbolism for him looking back at the past\ her being in the rear view is almost like she haunts him from time too from time to time.
At the end when he looks around and gets out of the car into a foggy area shows symbolism for moving on in uncertain territory.
