Good point about putting the FAA letter into the side pocket of every case. I’ve also learned that if I’m traveling with a Death Whistle, to take it out of my backpack (in whatever carrying case it’s in) and put it onto a tray for security to inspect - they have special tests for “human remains” even if it’s just a skull- or bone-shaped ceramic object. They asked “Does it kill people?”’ and I said “No, it makes a shrieking sound like the souls of the dead”. I offered to play it and they said “No, that’s not necessary”. Anyhow, I do strategize in advance about removing a specific flute or 2 from a case, before being forced to check the case. I’ve also seen classical flutists pack large instruments (cases and all) inside a professional golf club flight case- apparently these cases get special handling & are loaded/unloaded separately from the regular suitcases.

Thank you so much for posting this! I fly with my flutes quite a bit. I purchased a document tube, like the ones architects use, to protect my flutes. It almost always fits in the overhead bin. Sometimes, I even get to put it in the coat rack up front, which saves everyone space! I am glad you mentioned the Pelican cases. I get Apache cases from Harbor Freight. They are much, much more affordable. I purchased the largest size rifle and shotgun case they carry, hollowed out most of the foam, and can fit a couple dozen flutes in it. It's my best road trip case!
