About the Movie:

The Man From Nowhere (2010) (Korean 아저씨) is a South Korean action thriller film starring Won Bin and written and directed by Lee Jeong-beom. It was South Korea's highest grossing film in 2010.

In this magnificent martial arts knife scene, protagonist Cha Tae-sik finally faces off against Ramrowan a ruthless killer whose weapon of choice in this duel is the karambit. Ramrowan was masterfully played by Thai actor, Thanayong Wongtrakul.

In 2020, this was the most requested Scenic Fights karambit scene and Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) Pekiti Tirsia Kali instructor Logan Lo was so happy to finally use the karambit.

I honestly like seeing a weapons artist and a BJJ master working together and respecting each other’s arts instead of bashing each other...which sadly happens all too often

Nice to see the man from nowhere getting love. Don't see a lot of people talking about it considering it's a korean film, but it's one of the best action movies made.

I think at the beginning he uses the blunt edge because he never intended to kill cha. If you know what he'd done just before this, he wants that little girl saved. He wants cha to find her

You definitively need better names for your attacks than 'Knife-Attack No. 4". Something like 'Dragon Thunder Slice' or i dunno

My favorite thing about your breakdowns is how you leave room for cinematography and dramatic choices by the directors.

The correct thing to do when you see someone attacking with a knife is to run away, cause no matter how trained you are you are getting cut.

I medically retired from Law Enforcement. At the Academy, we were taught knife fighting. Most people used Benchmade I carried the double edge karambit. Easy to spin and the point on the grip would help. I still carry today. Great channel

Isn't it great how serious Logan is. (Not even 10 seconds into the fight scene) "See, now there's a problem right there"

The Karambit knife fight scene in the kitchen just b4 the finale from the Raid 2 is probably the best knife fight I’ve seen in any movie 👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I wanna see him breakdown the knife fight in the raid 2. That fight was legendary.

Karambit is such a misunderstood weapon. It takes a lot of careful practice and training to know how to wield it properly (and safely for the user!). I'd actually love to see something with a push dagger. They're more like a supplement to hand combat like brass knuckles, but a bit spicier since they're not really used for typical knife strikes.

Absolutely love these breakdowns! I've always intuitively enjoyed the quality of this fight scene, especially contrasting it with all the crappy knife scenes from hollywood, but hearing it being broken down by pros really brings to light how good it actually is. Keep up the good work!

Doug Mercaida is the one that introduced me to karambit then The Raid 2 made me fell in love to it more

In terms of plot perspective, I think the reason why Ramrowan wasn't trying to fight Cha at his best is because at this point in the movie, he already felt immense guilt from having to put up with the things his fellow colleagues (the ones Cha killed prior to this legendary knife fight) did that were outright disgusting and inhumane. Ramrowan was gradually showing his decaying mental state throughout the movie and I think his inability to even try and fight on par with Cha was due to the idea that he could've already wanted to die at this point thus showing the audience that this was expected to be a very one-sided fight and there was also a looming predictability that Cha was always bound to win against Ramrowan.

I love the karambit. It works into any open hand art really well as a capture/manipulation tool. I train in Hapkido and there are several techniques from dan bong (short stick) that translate into even more devastating manipulations using either the dull or the bladed side. I carry a Fox 478 daily so I focus on single edge karambit techniques. You can also carry the trainer as a nonlethal option when you don't need that much of a force multiplier but still want that advantage in the grapple.

Thanks for doing the duel. Seeing how Cha overpowers his opponent arm vs arm at the very end of the scene, I now wonder if that gunshot to Ramrowan's weapon hand shoulder at the start of the melee scene might have been a conscious choice for Cha.
