There is a secret story within Hot Fuss, the debut studio album by The Killers. A three-part tragedy presented out of order, hidden behind ambiguous lyrics and with one part left missing for years. A trilogy of tracks that together, reveal a memoir of murder. The murder of a woman named Jennifer at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. A classic tale of a romance gone bad.

Murder is a morbid interest of frontman Brandon Flowers, one he describes originating from Morrissey’s “Sister I’m A Poet,”

“I love the romance of crime,
And I wonder: Does anybody feel the same way I do?”

Flowers certainly felt the same way, letting that idea seep into his songwriting. For example, while touring Hot Fuss through Scotland, Flowers would hear the news on Jodi Jones, a 14 year old girl who was murdered by her boyfriend two years prior. The tragic story became the inspiration for the song, “Where is She?” Written from the perspective of Jodi’s mother, the song was heavily criticised by the Scottish press, leading The Killers to respectfully shelve the song, and it never seeing an official release. Flowers has called it “a great song”, saying “If I never would have said anything about it...maybe that song would be on Sam’s Town right now.”

However there was a murder story that did make it onto their albums. The story of Jennifer bears a striking similarity to that of Jodi’s, murdered at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. Jennifer’s story was intended to be the backbone of Hot Fuss, but when it came time to publish the record, the first song in the series failed to make the cut. The album wound up opening with the final part, “Jenny Was A Friend of Mine” and the central piece, “Midnight Show” was placed just before the album’s closer. The first part, titled, “Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf,” would only find a release three years later, on their rarities compilation Sawdust.

Now with all the evidence gathered and the story complete, let’s crack open this cold case and investigate The Killer’s Murder Trilogy.

When I think about it, Somebody Told Me and Mr. Brightside seems to be about Jenny too. On Somebody Told Me he heard that Jenny is seeing somebody else and mocks on the guy and their relationship (lowkey he is hurting about it). On Mr. Brightside, he sees it for himself and starts to act like a crazy stalker, following them to see them together. Hearing this album will never feel the same for me again hahahah

THEORY TIME: All of Hot Fuss is the murder story. Let me explain 1. Andy, you're a star: from the point of view of Jenny. She tells Andy that she loves him and reveals that he doesn't have any other real connection than with Jenny. "Andy you're a star, in nobody's eyes but mine. 2. Leave the Bourbon On The Shelf: She breaks up with him. "Oh Jennifer, you know I always tried/Darling don't you see I'm not satisfied until I hold you tight" 3. Smile Like You Mean It: Andy trying to cope with the breakup "Smile Like You Mean It / And someone will drive her around down the same streets that I did" 4. Mr. Brightside: He starts creeping on her. "Now they're going to bed and my stomach is sick / but she's touching his chest / I just can't look it's killing me" 5. Somebody Told Me: He meets up with Jenny and tells her about her new boyfriend and proceeds to mock him and prepares for the midnight show "Somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend / Pace yourself for me I said maybe baby please." 6. Change Your Mind: Right before the killing as he tries to reason with her, but ultimately makes the final decision "So if the answer's no can I change your mind / We're all the same and love is blind the sun is gone before it shines 6. Midnight Show: He proceeds to kill her "With jealous hearts that start with gloss and curls I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier Of stars in atmosphere and watched her disappear" 7.On Top: He watches her die "Your body's shaking and it's clear You really need it, so let go / I look at you and smile because I'm fine now." 8. Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine: The police start to question him and he gives his alibi. They don't seem to believe him: There ain't no motive for this crime Jenny was a friend of mine / I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time For me to go, so let me know if it's alright / And then you whisper in my ear "I know what you're doing here" " 9. All These Things That I've Done: Andy starts to panic. "These changes ain't changing me The cold-hearted boy I used to be / You know you've gotta help me out " 10. Everything Will Be Alright: He starts to relax and plans on his escape. "I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night Wrong until you make it right And I won't forget you At least I'll try and run, and run tonight Everything will be alright" -- The only thing that isn't clear is Believe Me, Natalie. From my interpretation of the lyrics, Natalie could be an accomplice in the murder. So he calls her and tells her to run away. But it doesn't seem to make sense as he asks for her help in All These Things That I've Done. "This is your last chance to find a go-go dance to disco now Forget what they said in Soho, leave the "Oh, no"s out And believe me, Natalie, listen, Natalie, This is your last chance" This is the only missing part of the puzzle. -- THEORY 2: Here's a lyric from Mr. Brightside and one from Midnight Show: "And it's all in my head but she's touching his chest / I got a blanket in the back seat on my mind" So Jenny's murder is all in Andy's head and he imagines how it would unfold. Then, the Believe Me Natalie mystery could be justified by the fact that he's not sure how the story would ho. I don't know if this is true, but it is mindblowing. This video and Licia Martins comment helped me figure this out.

When performed live, Brandon is also known to sing “she kicked and screamed while I held her close” as well.

Brandon flowers might be one of the best lyricists in music these days. So many of his songs do a fantastic job of mixing philosophical pondering and great storytelling. If you haven’t listened , check out the world that we live in and crossfire (by Brandon flowers)

Man I remember when I put this together when first heard Sawdust. One song that I always feel belongs on this was the song "All the pretty faces". Especially when you put it between bourbon and Midnight Show.
