there was a girl in my high school who did this for her choir tryout, was just b4 mine. She nailed it, spot on flawless. the teacher was a Pink Floyd fan, and was speechless, as was I and every one else.

My mother was dying of cancer, and she loved pink Floyd. We listened to this whole album, and when this song came on, we both looked at each other, tears in our eyes, and held hands.. we both knew. She died the next day.

It's amazing how a song without words can "mean" so much.

I just wrote my Dad's eulogy and ended by asking him to save me a seat at The Great Gig in the Sky. He was a musician and absolutely loved Pink Floyd. RIP Dad, 12/02/2020

I always get chills when I hear the man stating,"I am not frighten of dying, why should I be frightened?" while the music briefly intensifies.

No words were spoken. But you could feel every word that was spoken. The souls communicate in such a way through music and feel when you truly listen. The pain, the happiness, the anger. All put in a single scream 🥲. Its so beautiful for no reason yet we still find it’s beauty

Listening to this loud enough with good quality headphones is almost like psychedelics. Literally sitting here fully sober feeling like my bedroom is being catapulted into space from the music alone, it's amazing.

I’ve listened to this song every day for the past 8 months. It was the last song my dad ever listened to, and requested it on his way to the hospital. Looking at the meaning and listening to what’s being said makes me feel like he’s at peace and that he wasn’t scared anymore. This song means a lot to me and thank you for writing it.

I dedicate this to my best friend Jordan who committed suicide by jumping off a bridge two months ago. He was in the hospital in a coma and a week ago I was informed that everything was going better until today that I got a message telling me he passed away. The quote "I am not frightened of dying, you know, any time will do, I don't mind" at the start of the song hits very different now. Rest In Power buddy, I'll never forget ya.

“The Great Gig In The Sky” - Pink Floyd The vocals were done by a petite British lady studio singer brought in by the Producer Allan Parsons named Claire Torrie. She did not know what they wanted her to sing. David Gilmour suggested she use her voice like a Saxophone… it worked great. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus.

This song genuinely helps me whenever my existentialism becomes way too much for me to bear. It takes all that fear, horror, terror, grief, and despair and bleeds it all out through a musical bloodletting. And I am left feeling light, luminous, anchored, and ready to face reality once more.

My brother told me the story of how Pink Floyd heard this female in a band and asked her to come to the recording studio and she sang this song. It was put in the album and she had no idea that they kept the recording of her singing and put it in the song Great gig in the sky. She had no clue she was going to be in the album until she got a huge check in the mail and the song was already in the album and starting to be a huge hit. My brother who died told me that story at Christmas time. Oh how I miss my brother Jimmy.
