In the summer of 1381, an army of medieval peasants marched on London. The Peasants Revolt was triggered by King Richard II's poll tax, which was seen as a cruel burden on the already impoverished peasants. But the revolt is unfairly characterized as an unorganized mob of poor farmers. It was a strategic uprising that included all walks of society. The army included parish priests, laborers, artisans, and small traders who also supported the rebellion. The rebellion was fueled by discontent caused by a battered economy, the heavy toll of ongoing wars with France, and the demands of the feudal system. The rebellion initially achieved some success, with rebels capturing London and negotiating with the king, but it was ultimately crushed by the royal army, resulting in the death of many rebels.

What I learned from this is that the peasants had more honor and courage than the nobility.

This is why royalists baffle me. Likeā€¦ aristocrats donā€™t see you as human, dude. They probably find you repulsive. Despite the failure of the rebellion, we should take some cruel comfort in Richard IIā€™s eventual death by starvation, suffering the same fate his government forced upon his subjects.

What people tend to forget about medieval times is that we would be those peasants. Just as the 1% rule today they ruled then as well, as monarchs. Itā€™s hard to imagine life as a peasant but truth be told most people still are today, just through a different modern lense. Still the common man dies for the economic gains and for the ceaseless campaigns of those wealthy and powerful

Tyler's mistake was like many revolutionaries through history - never assume those in power have any ethics or morals or that they will stick to any agreement or exchange of words, be utterly ruthless when you get your chance. He should have tricked the king and never thought for even a split second the king wouldnt do the same, which he obviously did.

History are usually presented from the point of view of the ruling elites. We need more history presented from the angles of common men. Great production.

A history of the people rather than the Kings. Refreshing.

History always repeats. The only reason life got better was due to revolutions and peoples effort. Both of which are lacking today and we are sliding backwards now

We're almost here again and I hope we will act accordingly. Better to die free than live a slave

to sum up... the king starts a war, the peasants pay for the war, the king wins the war and seizes the losers loot, king keeps loot.. any wonder the peasants were up for trying this new fangled "government" idea?

Comments suggest that the ruling classes, corporate business aristocracy and monarchy are regarded in much the same way today.

Serfs were slaves in all but name. As magnificent and wonderful as our castles and historic monuments are in England our history is bloody awful. And today? Today we are, in many ways, still serfs in all but name.

Three days work to pay that tax they say? Now people would pay it without raising a pinky finger. We pay much more in taxation and are subjected to much more oversight and laws but we do nothing.

Families had many children so this parents owed a tax for themselves and those children over 15. No wonder they revolted.

They should have killed the king when they had the chance.
