I had a similar experience. There was a guy who I got so close to. Best friends close. And we would talk everyday. He came to my birthday party, I went to his. We even went to a basketball game together. But we were only friends. I never really thought of him as anything more than my close friend. Fast forward a year and I see him again after the summer is over. And guess what. We don’t talk. It felt so awkward being around him when it used to feel so natural. Even saying his name felt weird. I’ve cried over this lost friendship several times and have thought about talking to him about it, but never did. We didn’t end our friendship over a fight or disagreement, it just faded. Sometimes I would ask him silly little questions just to have an excuse to talk to him. I still know so much about him, but what do I do with that information now? I wish things could just go back to the way they were. I miss him.
