The first time I listened to it when I was in 2nd grade of junior high school, and now that I'm 45 years old and have 2 beautiful grandchildren, this album still makes me head bang. Metallica never gets old 🤘🤘🤘

Checking out their best album first ! nice ! check out Ride the Lightning, And Justice For All, or the self-titled album next, they will not disappoint.

When I was 9 or 10 years old, I had a close friend from school who had 3 older sisters between ages 12 and 17. The 3 of them loved giving us cassette tapes filled with all the big rock and metal bands of the late 80s - Ozzy, Slayer, Guns N Roses, and of course Metallica. I am eternally grateful to those girls for giving me copies of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. They made a little metal head out of me and over 30 years later, I still love those albums.

The theme of the album is about control, how I interpret each song is that they speak of how controlled you are, whether it's the energy of the fans (Battery); For Drugs (Master Of Puppets); For fear (The Thing That Should not be); For psychiatric institutions (Welcome Home); For the Army/Government (Disposable Heroes); For the Church/false shepherds (Leper Messiah); For the feeling of being only one in the universe (Orion) and For the system as a whole (Damage Inc.)

The music in the song Master of Puppets tells the whole story. The opening aggression is the need for the drug. The middle melodic section is the fix, the euphoria section. Then it wears off back into the aggressively hard need again.

A total masterpiece from start to finish, but my personal favourite Metallica album is its predecessor Ride the Lightning - well worth another reaction/commentary 🤘

The audio technique you referred to as “The Thing…” fades out was in the original mix. It’s known as “panning”. Recording engineers went crazy in the sixties with it. Check out Beatles recordings from the mid-late sixties and also Hendrix for more examples.

I loved the Stranger Things cameo of this song. This is considered by a lot of people (not everyone lol) to be the single best Metal song ever written. Cheers! New sub :)

I was 13 when this album was released. That was it, my mind was blown, and Ive been a fan since. If you want to begin the Metallica rabbit hole off right, watch the video VH1 Behind The Music on Metallica, Settle in with some popcorn and a drink. You will laugh, you'll cry, you will wear a Metallica shirt with pride! Its interesting that you mention the bass player. That was Cliff Burton, a legend. Sadly he was killed when their tour bus crashed while touring Europe on this album. Their music slowed down a lot without Cliff. Watch the Behind The Music on them. In fact, react to it.
