When I was 9 or 10 years old, I had a close friend from school who had 3 older sisters between ages 12 and 17. The 3 of them loved giving us cassette tapes filled with all the big rock and metal bands of the late 80s - Ozzy, Slayer, Guns N Roses, and of course Metallica. I am eternally grateful to those girls for giving me copies of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. They made a little metal head out of me and over 30 years later, I still love those albums.

The theme of the album is about control, how I interpret each song is that they speak of how controlled you are, whether it's the energy of the fans (Battery); For Drugs (Master Of Puppets); For fear (The Thing That Should not be); For psychiatric institutions (Welcome Home); For the Army/Government (Disposable Heroes); For the Church/false shepherds (Leper Messiah); For the feeling of being only one in the universe (Orion) and For the system as a whole (Damage Inc.)

I was 13 when this album was released. That was it, my mind was blown, and Ive been a fan since. If you want to begin the Metallica rabbit hole off right, watch the video VH1 Behind The Music on Metallica, Settle in with some popcorn and a drink. You will laugh, you'll cry, you will wear a Metallica shirt with pride! Its interesting that you mention the bass player. That was Cliff Burton, a legend. Sadly he was killed when their tour bus crashed while touring Europe on this album. Their music slowed down a lot without Cliff. Watch the Behind The Music on them. In fact, react to it.

The first time I listened to it when I was in 2nd grade of junior high school, and now that I'm 45 years old and have 2 beautiful grandchildren, this album still makes me head bang. Metallica never gets old 🤘🤘🤘
