Do YOU use "box dye" to color your hair at home?
Are you a hair stylist that hates the idea of clients using DIY hair colour?!
Well, in this video I share my thoughts on why home hair color isn't as BAD as lots of folks think it is.
And I take you around the drug store, (that's a chemist in the UK) to have a look at whats GOOD and what should perhaps be avoided...?
I share my 37 years of knowledge as a hairstylist and hair colourist/educator, to help take the FEAR out of hair color for home use.
SPOILER ALERT - Some of them are GREAT and you might be surprised to hear, very similar to what's used in the salon.
Do you have a hair colour question? Remember, I reply to ALL your comments and whilst I can't give out specific hair colour formulas without seeing you, I'm happy to help as much as possible.
What other videos would you like to see in this series? Please let me know in the comments...?

I sat in a chair for 3 hours every 4 weeks for 25 years until Covid. I was scared to death to color my own hair, let alone use box color having been humiliated in the past. I finally gave in, and the results were wonderful! I was very relieved I matched the color. Not only that I could do it in the privacy of my own home. No awkward conversations, no longer a victim of being triple booked. It was a revelation and quite empowering. The last time I sat in a chair I was chided for using box color while he gave me a very unfitting mom cut that took months to grow out. That was 2 years ago and I now cut my own hair too, finally looking how I want to look.

I have lots of clients who home colour, some of them are a lovely colour, i even tell them. Dont judge, not everyone can afford to have it done by a professional. I'm just glad the're in my chair ā¤

I was buying a lipstick at a salon, I heard a stylist very loudly humiliating a woman for coloring her hair at home. It was a small crowded salon, I almost told her off.

Its so refreshing to hear someone not demonise home colour ā¤ The outcome may not always be perfect but neither am I so at least my hair always fits me!

I color my hair at home because I've been bullied too many times by hair dressers. Every time I find a good one who understands my hair, they leave! ( one left to work at a funeral home because "dead people don't complain!). I reasearch, research, research EVERYTHING about the products I I use. I'm so glad I found your chanel. Btw, I'm 67 years old and still working.,so I want to look somewhat good, not deadšŸ˜Š. Thank you for your kindness to box dye users

I can afford a stylist to cut and color my hair; however, after many disappointing haircuts and colors, I took matters into my own hands. For the last six years, I have cut and colored my hair. My hair has never looked better; a woman recently said your hair looks straight out of a hair ad. She was shocked that I didn't go to a professional to have my hair look this good. The bottom line is just because someone went to school and trained to become a hairstylist does not mean they have natural talent. I am naturally talented in the hair and makeup department and rely on natural skills. I have paid hundreds of dollars to have my hair cut properly, and I always left unsatisfied. I went to the "best of the best," so to speak, and was left disappointed. I go to Sally's and use the Wella Demi hair color. I will sometimes even highlight my hair, and it looks fantastic. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for what you use on your hair. It's your head, not theirs.

Wait what? How can a person who looks no more than 37 have 37 years of hairdressing experience? How?? Iā€™m so glad I stumbled upon your channel, I love your content and you exude a gentle and lovely energy. ā¤

I can either afford to have my hair cut professionally or colored professionally, but not both. If I have to pick one to do myself I figure I'm better off coloring it myself than cutting it myself.

Hi. I am new here. I am so grateful for your video. I don't go to hair salons because I simply can't afford it so I do my hair myself using box dyes for many years. I never had any problems with box dyes.

I don't dye my hair anymore (I decided to go grey almost 2 years ago), but this was a very interesting and useful video because I always hear some hairdressers demonizing box dye without understanding that not all people have the means to go to a professional.

I use supermarkets hair dyes, I donā€™t go to boots and pay Ā£3/4 more just for the pleasure of being in boots. I had colour done from stylists and the only difference I see is the very good conditioners that you have access to. But colours donā€™t last better and overall I get no benefits in going to a salon to get my hair done. Donā€™t even get me started on haircutsā€¦I had to learn to cut my own hair because I was tired of them saying they can do what I ask for and coming out with something different. And this is a problem many ppl haveā€¦it shouldnā€™t happen so much. Hairdressers should be able to cut hair that go beyond a bob

This is so refreshing to hear, thereā€™s too many hair YouTubers who shame those who use box dyes. Iā€™m planning on going to hair school later this year, and I want to be a hairdresser who is just as accepting as you are ā¤

So interesting. We have lots of clients that use home hair colour. They come to us for cutting and blow drying. Then occasionally will have use to the colour or a few highlights. Not ā€˜demonisingā€™ home hair colour has kept them loyal to us. Even telling them where they might have missed a bit or given them application advice also helps. We also had our client use Casting CrĆØme during Covid, we advised on shades and had no colour ā€˜correctionsā€™ when we reopened, and the clients were happy they they didnā€™t have to look at grey hair in the mirror. Win win for us all.
