Absinthe, such a beautiful name for such an intoxicating liquor.

In Victorian England you didn't have to worry about green alcohol making you go insane but you did have to worry about the green wall paper or clothes killing you slowly.

I usually mix it with raspberry soda. Raspberry and anything tasting like licorice goes together really well.

I was super drunk at a party once and started drinking some absinthe. It enhanced my buzz significantly, I felt energetic afterwards, usually I go in the other direction after being drunk for a while. I attributed it to the absinthe, but of course I can't know for sure.

In France we often pour Absinthe over the sugar cube and then set fire to it and then just let it drip into the glass; it won't always melt entirely so we either add water as you did or simply drop the remainder of sugar into the glass and give it a stir 😊

I have a nice little cocktail made up for people who say ‘my drinks aren’t strong enough’ It’s kept in an OLD cork-top glass listerine bottle I found at an antique shop. It’s 1/3 Rumple Minze, 1/3 Absinthe, and 1/3 Everclear (with a few drops of neon blue and green food coloring to get that typical ‘listerine color’. I call it a listerine shot, and it shuts up anyone :)

Btw Absinth is typically clear and comes from Switzerland 🇨🇭. Just the cheap stuff is green, blue or whatever other color.

Well it's kinda true. Back in the day when making it sometimes the worm wood would have a psychedelic effect

Ah yes, when friends and I got absinthe in high school and expected to trip balls.

If I recall correctly, the hallucinations were caused by improper distillation. Either from using bad materials in the still, like lead pipes. Or from the ingredients.

Literally giving people a concussion like that clip is definitely the wrong way to do it 😂

My husband is a chemist, and apparently, it used to actually make you go a bit mad because of the wormwood. Those old bottles with liquid still in them go for big bucks in illegal auctions, but it's betting blind as it's easy to add whatever and say it's absinthe. I collect antique glassware and have 4 absinthe dispensers. I think only 1 is genuine as it smells horribly of anise and pine needles and gives off a green fog when dripped onto the water and suger jazz. I've never tasted it because I hate anise and fennel and booze in general, and I can't find absinthe glasses.

The primary reason behind the bad rap absinthe got was because it was common practice to add laudnum, which was made from opium, to the sugar cube before starting the drip.
