It's crazy to me how the US is so deep into the Apple ecosystem and how it's virtually impossible to live with an Android phone because everyone uses the Apple messaging apps (iMessage, FaceTime, etc) In Europe, whether you have an iPhone or an Android, everyone just uses third party apps like whatsapp so you can pick either phone and you'll be fine

Honestly, I was in the market for this feature for years.
I’m 29, and just recently bought my first IPhone in large part because of how convenient IMessage is. But after using it for almost a year now, I was seriously considering switching back to Android phone. Well, this just made the decision so much easier!

In Europe even if you have an iPhone, you simply use WhatsApp. It's almost rude to initiate a discussion with someone you meet for the first time using Apple messages which may or may not revert to SMS depending on the other person's device. You simply don't do it. The fact that iMessage and FaceTime are considered 'lock-in' cultural phenomena in the US is the most head-scratching thing for us.
