"OCEAN is a very interesting aspect of my life. It is part of my DNA. It conveys all things I can't put into words.
Life, loss, love, spirit. As I evolve so too does 'Ocean'. The song was first recorded as part of my first album/cassette,
"Searching For Heritage", which I sold when I busked, then for my first self-titled studio album 12 years ago -- "John Butler (1998)".
The song has been watched online incredibly over 25 million times in various formats, nearly always live, be it from MusicMax Sessions or from one of the many festivals I have had the pleasure to play. I'd like to thank you for your continued support over all these years; it means so much to me. I would like to thank you by offering this first studio recording of 'Ocean' in over a decade as a free download.
I recorded it in my favourite studio, The Compound here in Fremantle Western Australia, a studio you helped me build.
This marks just another fleeting moment in a career that is very much ongoing.
I look forward to bringing you many new songs and albums into the future and continuing this amazing journey with you ALL.
THANK YOU,
J.B"

My friend and brother Dusty Wallace showed me this song in the parking lot of a hotel we were staying in for a ironworking job. I was 20 and he was 18 , both of us played guitar and were simply astounded at Johnā€™s prowess and awestruck by the beauty of the song . One month later I travelled back to Ohio with him and stayed for 3 weeks, Dusty gave me my first dose of LSD and it was this single most life changing experience event Iā€™ve ever had, short of being born. Dusty sat with me as I rode the waves of bliss and as I sunk down to the depths of despair. He was there as i weeped over the revelations I was having about how badly Iā€™ve treated people, about how Iā€™ve ignored people who love me. 8 years later and I still have never bonded with anotherā€™s soul like we did that day. A few months after I returned home, into a life that no longer made sense to me and bore very little resemblance to who I was, Dusty died in a car accident, itā€™s hard to describe how broken I was. I had just started a new job and had about $100 to my name, but I loaded my car and made the 8 hour trip up to Ohio for his funeral. Right as I was walking out after talking with his parents, his dad ran after me and handed me a $100 bill. I still canā€™t make sense of this, he had no idea that I had a spent my literal last dollar to attend the funeralā€¦it was very mystical. This song always takes me back to that time, it takes me back to that day with Dusty as my life changed forever, to me part of his soul lies within this song. I cry every time I hear it. Dusty my friend, I miss you, almost every step Iā€™ve taken since you passed, Iā€™ve taken with you in mind. I wish I could thank you for the impact you had on me, because of you Iā€™m a more loving and empathic person, I canā€™t imagine my life if I had not met you . I will see you when I see you my dear friend.

Long ago I believed it was a guitar man who my heart would always belong. I'm older and wiser now,and I realize it was not the man but the guitar. To every guitar playing man ,woman and child I thank you for making a sometimes sour life so beautiful and with every strum a little sweeter.

My husband used to listen to this so often, I couldn't stand it anymore. Now he died very suddenly 2 months ago and I listen to this again while crying for the love of my life. I remember how my handsome man worked while hearing this and now I love this song, too. I miss my best friend šŸ˜¢
