By the conclusion of After Hours, The Weeknd was left paralyzed by the weight of his own emotions. He had failed to free himself of his perpetual cycle of love and loss, only continuing to live up to the duality of his musical moniker: ā€œThe weekendā€ and its promise of pleasure, romance and late night antics -- but also ā€œthe weakenedā€ in regards to the emotional toll his destructive lifestyle seems to have on him.

But after the darkness must come the dawn. Dawn FM findā€™s Abel fighting to free himself once and for all. Unpacking former regrets, understanding childhood trauma and being emotionally vulnerable all lead Abel one step closer towards the light.

The real question is where heā€™ll end up in the aftermath. Should it be heaven or hell? Letā€™s tune in to Abelā€™s latest broadcast and break down Dawn FM.

I had to take a break from this album. I listened to it RELIGIOUSLY FOR TWO WEEKS haha. It's so good though. The Weeknd's 2020's albums have been stellar so far

The amount of detail put in this video is insane. I knew this video was gonna be an instant classic once I saw you slip the little Las Vegas after the Heaven or Hell part in the intro

What an extremely interesting take on the story of the album. I like how you didnt take the purgatory part literally with him being literally dead and being led towards literal heaven. It makes the whole struggle he faces less fictional and more raw and powerful. Awesome video man! Keep up the awesome work

I love how haunting Jim Carrey was during this album, especially with the final track monologue

Please do breakdowns on his earlier albums too! You thread all these songs into a poetic tale so beautifully. Thank you for this.

ALBUM REVIEW: DAWN FM by THE WEEKND. Storytelling in music holds an esteemed position of being the sacred craft that introduces the audience to a somber, less glamorous side of the artist that is almost never seen in public. It is so treasured because not only is it a more relatable image for the ones who listen; it is also a strangely pleasant reminder that after and above all else, the artist is also just a human being. When taking this into account, it dawns upon us that The Weekndā€™s craft is not about following trends in terms of making music according to an arbitrary feeling or a lighthearted jibe in the studio. His entire catalogue is him going through a musical metamorphosis that closely chronicles his life, the good and bad decisions heā€™s made and how far heā€™s come because of those said decisions, as well as the people heā€™s been with through it all. Letā€™s take for instance: Beauty Behind The Madness. That album represents his ascension to the stratosphere, whereas Starboy is this super cool bad boy persona taking his place as the self-centered light of the universe ā€” he shines alone and he doesnā€™t want anyone hogging his light. In a sense, it was him getting comfortable in the overwhelming darkness that his stardom propelled him into, and he was simply adapting as a brilliant supernova that splashes colorfully against the impenetrable background of unrelenting blackness. My Dear Melancholy takes a complete 180 from the bad boy who didnā€™t care about anything and anyone and who did what he wanted, when he wanted. It is an emotionally anguishing reflection of what heā€™s lost on his way to the top ā€“ mostly the relationships he regretted ending, which set the table for After Hours: the self loathing, complete disregard for self through frightening levels of debauchery and hedonism detailed in this project are his ways of coping with the pain as he tumbles further downwards into a black hole of blinding despair to which he appears to have no escape. And then, after seeing the light beckoning upon the horizon, heā€™s not looking back. If thereā€™s anything you should admit about The Weeknd, itā€™s that heā€™s owned every phase of his life that heā€™s lived. From the magnificent to the macabre, his ability to reinvent himself by opening alternate realities within the same dimension is a telling piece of evidence in favor of his multifaceted personality that he pours into every single element of his music, right down to the last note. DAWN FM, is only but a stage within that musical evolution. As a matter of fact, it symbolizes a graceful rebirth with the purest intentions. By reaching into the treasures of the past with his 80s electro new wave retro disco pop sound, he establishes a futuristic nostalgia of sorts that works as the latex synthesizing the past, present and future quite cohesively. It is a transcendental reality of arcade games and headbands and gym leotards and cassette players and VHS recordings and vinyl records and serene bicycle rides through blissful suburbia at high noon, merged with an ambitious, idealistic future of alien ships and flying cars and jetpacks and advanced time travel that is all so expertly packed into a gentle psychedelic masterpiece which is as healthy for the soul as it is pleasant to the ears. The album explores themes like emotional vulnerability, love, sincerity, remorse and forgiveness; that at the end of the day, Abel Tesfaye is only but a man, and more so, a hopeless romantic that has set his toxic masculinity aside and therefore finds no shame in being so emotionally exposed. Jim Carrey's patient narration throughout the album defines him as a voice of generous guidance. Some might even say, his role in the album is that of a celestial being leading those who seek his counsel for direction into the light, and that regret over the past is futile because there is a heavenly future awaiting those who relieve themselves of the burdens of the days gone by and are intent on starting as a new being. Regarding all the religious connotations laden in this album, Iā€™d hardly think that its release on the 7th of January ā€“ which just so happens to be Christmas day on the Ethiopian Orthodox Calendar ā€“ is a lucky coincidence. From the engineering, production right through to the mastering, not once does the album deflate in its delivery; Quincy Jonesā€™ poignant little tale does indeed set the heart at ease. Lil Wayne was at his laconic best on ā€œI Heard Youā€™re Marriedā€, and Tyler, The Creator chipped in with some lyrical efficiency of his own. The transition from ā€œBest Friendsā€ into ā€œIs There Someone Elseā€ ā€“ which is arguably the best track on the album (with strong competition from ā€œOut Of Timeā€ and ā€œLess Than Zeroā€, which is my personal favourite)ā€“ signals the sonorous climax to what is already poised to be, in my opinion, one of the albums of the year. It is worth mentioning that there is almost NO MENTION of hedonistic living in his lyrical content throughout the project, and upon pending rumours of The Weekndā€™s desire to quit drugs and start a family, this is possibly his way of turning over a new leaf into a brand-new chapter of his life. RATING: 89%.

DAWN FM is the best album this year. It has everything from The Music, 80's vibes, and kickass Jim Carry Radio DJ-style narrations. The Weeknd can do no wrong.

It's already one of my favorite albums this year, and I can't wait to see what happens on the next album. It's amazing how a star as mainstream as him makes albums with overarching themes, callbacks, and a story told through a series of albums, all sounding great with well written songs.

after watching this video, i feel like Dawn FM is abel reliving his past mistakes and Dawn FM is both a sequel and a prequel to After Hours all the mistakes abel relives in Dawn FM is his life before After Hours, where after one heartbreak (i heard youā€™re married and less than zero), Abel went on this life in after hours, drugs, sex, and being alone again. then after abel dies in After Hours, he enters purgatory, where he relives his life before after hours, mistakes that made him the person he is on After Hours and a judging factor whether heā€™ll be on heaven, or hell.

You remind me of Casey Kasem breaking down music and the artist back in the 80ā€™s when we listened on Saturday while doing our chores. Seriously Nostalgic. You just took me back to my childhood.

I watched your breaking down after hours in 2020 and it got me into the weeknd which got me into music. Music is now my everything, itā€™s my hype, my therapy - got me through some dark times too. I owe it all to you. Thank you kind sir. I cannot explain my excitement when I saw you made a Dawn FM one. (My current favourite album btw) Iā€™m very much into web design and graphic design in general and I love your video style too.
