I'm a birth mom.
Sure as hell never thought that'd be me...
... I'm 1000% pro- choice, & always wanted kids.
I'm glad this topic was discusseda bit, I hope it can be explored more in the future. I'm a bit surprised this is the 1st I've seen adoption mentioned here (listened to MR for 7+ yrs) bc it is SUCH a fraught, political issue. My birth daughter has a great home, loving parents... everything I never did. That was my one concern at the time... however, I really wish someone had warned me to be wary & advocate for myself. Bc unfortunately, as for how it affects me - the adoption feels like yet another way I got shafted by our uniquely hellish system.
I'm one of millions of Americans who fell thru the cracks... I couldn't finish my degree once I became disabled in my 20s. The adoption was a direct result of my being unhoused/sleeping rough for several YEARS, which was directly caused by disabling chronic illness & the loss of my health insurance.
The adoption process in this country is a dreadful product of misogyny, commodified health care, capitalism, religion, & meritocracy propaganda.

It's sad that this is one of the few adoption conversations I've heard that actually focuses on birth parents. It's usually centered on adoptive parents or the adoptees. Similar to anti-choice rhetoric, the birth parent gets relegated to "incubator" far too much.
