I personally would rather the devs be experimental with their game design than timid and overly safe, so I welcome a hero civ (although centering it around a specific historical figure is still a strange choice ngl) and I imagine if players end up hating it, then we simply won't see more hero civs in the future, at least until they tweak this into something players enjoy

Jeanne d'Arc famously never killed in battle, choosing to carry a banner to be army moral rather than a warrior.
- Jeanne d'Arc gets a canon in the game.
Jeanne d'Arc is most famous for helping Orleans weather a siege, a very defensive situation.
- Jeanne d'Arc's XP requirements discourages defensive plays.
Slow clap...

IMO it was a missed opportunity to bring in a “crusader” civ. Also a French variant, also focused on a hero and their few companions, but super relevant to the DLC, and also much more ‘generic’ and therefore acceptable to history fans. Instead of Jeanne, you would have a “champion” that represents the likes of one of the original Crusaders such as Bohemond, Godfrey, Raymond of Toulouse, Tancred, etc. The only difference is that such champions didn’t act as peasants so the whole villager part may be strange. Unless that part represents a ‘champion’ from the People’s Crusade

I actually think this is may turn out to be a great interesting decision. Those that like the idea get a breath of fresh air, while those that hate this new idea… just… don’t have to play the Civ. In each game it’ll prob feel more like a campaign mission now where you have to worry about a “General” but balance is key to making this a good addition. I’m impressed with their willingness to try something so new and bold! It shows they’re willing to make mistakes to keep us all interested

Honestly, all bets for ''grounded realism'' at least for hero units, was when the english king wields a gigantic F-off sword in one hand that most people would have trouble using effectively with 2. While mounted....and using a shield.
I really admire the ''out there'' nature of AoE4 civs, and they're just coming out with more really cool ideas. Sure it's not as a-symetrical as say SC2, but they're really putting out some cool and unique stuff per civ.

If i got to make a variant i would have for sure it would be a Archduchy of Austria
Focused on Maximiliam I army so centered about landsknetch changing some units to be more inline
Pikemen instead of spearmen
Handgunners instead of crossbowmen
And more focused on doppels than men at arms
With unique recruitment (maybe more expensive but faster) to represent the mercenary army

I think the option for a hero civ is really nice. I may not be the biggest fan of hero civs but I think this is overall a good choice, maybe we will get some wc3 players to check the game out and fall in love with it. If that's the case then I love it! This game needs more players because it is so damn good! Also if you don't like the hero civ then don't play it! There are 5 more civs coming this expansion that you can try out that are not hero focused
