Why Wonder Woman 1984 Has A White Feminism Problem (a breakdown of what went wrong):Light Work #7

Wonder Woman 1984 is a pretty bad movie for a lot of reasons. It's a bitter disappointment for me as a man with a healthy love for the character. However, DC's newest stumble out of the gate is bad in a way that is a bit more concerning that it's other failures. Either Patty Jenkins, or the studio, or someone really didn't sit down to think about the optics and concepts that were being displayed on the screen, and because of this, the movie's "woke" subtext really really comes off wrong.

On this episode of Light Work Fiq reacts to what was going through his head as he turned on his HBO GO account to stream this movie. He breakdown what really happened and what with wrong, including the worst type of "easter egg" a movie can have (when you find something you wished you wouldn't.) He watched Wonder Woman run through the greatest hits of irresponsible white feminism and neuvo wokeness, and breaks down why this doesn't work and why the movie is worse for it. Pour one out for the DCU stans.

Also special announcement at the beginning for a contest leading us to a celebration of hitting 200 subs!

I’m a survivor and it bothers me to see how casually we treat the rape of boys and men. It’s disgusting. Any person who has been violated needs to be accepted and listened to and understood. It’s needed in order for healing to happen.

It means a lot hearing a blatantly obvious rape scene called out as a rape scene. As sad as it is, that seemed to fly under a lot of peoples radar. As a survivor, it means a lot everytime someone calls out that kind of thing for what it is. Thank you! Also your videos are great, i love the nuance and perspective you provide 💖

Great video! My issue with all women led action movies that I've seen is that they still are written and filmed with a white patriarchal male gaze. All female heroes somehow have their arc related back to men in some way (Lara her dad, WW her boyfriend). They are trying to just recreate a male driven action movie and shove women into the mold, whilst still actually centring white men in the narrative, and put one instance of her making a witty "feminist" comeback and then call it a feminist. Really interesting to hear a man's perspective so thank you.

As a (female) Wonder Woman comics fan, I'm disappointed that Diana barely interacts with other women in her movies (especially not WoC). For the first film it kind of worked because of the war setting.

But for the sequel it seemed tone-deaf especially because Diana didn't seem to care that much about Barbara's struggles. Example: She just let her walk home alone after Barbara had just been assaulted! That's not the Wonder Woman I love.

I didn't want Steve Trevor to return in this icky way. I wanted to see more of the Amazons. Hyppolita, Donna Troy, Artemis, Nubia, Phillippus, Circe, Goddesses like Athena, Hera…

Wonder Woman has so many great female supporting characters and we get none of them (or they are awkwardly shoved in like Cheetah). Instead, they keep going back to Steve (who I liked in the first movie).

I hope WW3 fixes this and gives us more of the WW mythology I love (the Amazons and Gods and Goddesses!). Let Diana interact with other women for God's sake and make her actually care about them!

Yep. DC should have brought Steve back in his original body. He'd be more plausibly recognizable to her and the sex scene would be SSC (Safe, Sane, and Consensual). Perhaps the movie should have had some intersectional feminists among the writing staff? And she should be in flats!

I watched this movie with my little bro who was sexually assaulted by a woman and this movie made us both really uncomfortable watching a movie about a character that we both generally love sucks. It sucks. This movie is gross and it sucks. And I will always be mad about it.

I was hugely disappointed with this film, and thank you for calling out rape for rape. I found it DEEPLY uncomfortable in the movie theatre when I went to see it, and weirdly I found Pedro Pascal's char (sorry I can't remember his name) the most sympathetic in many ways, with Cheeta a close second. The person I didn't really "root for"? Was Diana and she's been a char I loved since I was a child.
The fact that a female director allowed what felt like the normalisation of using and dehumanising a man like that was really, really horrible. I say dehumanising because, like you said, his entire person was ignored, his entire life was ignored he stopped being whomever he was and became the person she wanted. WHY was this something that the writers or director felt was acceptable?!
No person should be treated like they are not a person. It makes me really angry and it really disgusted me.

Dave Chappelle actually described white feminism the best "You all were in on the heist, you just didn't like your cut." LMFAO that stuck with me and to this day I laugh at how simply, hilariously accurate that is. Love the video. Thanks for posting. I'm new to this channel, but I've been seeing nothing but hits so far. Thanks again.

Man. Thank you for once not just dragging DC'S name through the ground. The movies have been struggling, but I feel so much of this "har har DC comics bad" comes from those who's only experience with the universe is through film, while also forgetting that Batman was at the front of this modern era and the past era of superhero movies.

Damn, I did not know that about Margaret Sanger

i feel like cheeta and wonderwomans conflict is DC doing that "good woman vs bad woman" thing that the new live action Mulan also did. (disclaimer: i havent watched both movies fully, so idk to what extent my comment is true)
the good woman (wonderwoman): does engage (sexually) with her man, military
bad woman: mentally unstable, fights back for her own

I'mma have to really look into why Max is supposed to be Trump. He doesn't seem like Trump to me at all. But I may be totally overlooking some things. I agree with your other points. The body snatcher consent issue was so blaringly loud for me that I couldn't even enjoy the movie fully. And the other thing I personally didn't like is that they make Barbara is so accomplished and yet she still felt inferior to Diana in every way. Just could've made her obsessed with being as super strong as Diana or something. Makes me sad that her accomplishments didn't seem to count for anything, like the film didn't even try to drive that in as a point.

If we swapped out Diana with a less attractive woman, it would instantly be similar to Stephen King’s Misery. A lot of problematic themes in film are just glossed over with putting attractive actors in the roles.

Wonder Woman truly is one of my absolute favorite superheroes. So when the first film dropped I felt pretty weird because the story wasn’t connecting for me. Then 1984 dropped and I said, “Naaaaw, not my Wonder Woman!” I am disgusted by the lack of care that was taken into men who are sexually assaulted. That and the fact that she can’t fix her face to be great unless a man is next to her. THERE WAS NO REAL REASON TO BRING HIM BACK. It almost feels like they aren’t confident enough that Wonder Woman (Diana) as a character can stand on her own, and that breaks my heart because she has so many cool stories where she’s not only the baddest bitch but has the biggest heart. THANK YOU, truly for talking about this movie with such care and insight. 💙

Really great video. I think one of the issues with intersectionality and feminism is the way it plays out in other parts of the world. The lead actress was once apart of the Israeli army and made comments about Palestinians. Her privilege and access to power in her home country dismisses or delegitimized the existence of those she deems "unworthy". The films oversimplified solution to extremism has been an integral part of its geopolitical practice in the 70s and 80s. Which ties into how this film depicts this era. It could be their "justification" for the "good 'o days".

So, this movie makes the main character the least likable, rapey, partonising woman who's whole existence revolves around her dead boyfriend.
Makes one of the villains an educated, but shy and lost woman who feels everyone is patronizing her and for once knows how it is to have power. And the MC instead of helping her just patronizes her more and allows her to die.
The main villain, who is basically a caricature of Trump has a chance of redemption by the MC coz... he has a son?
They couldn't get feminism worse if they tried.

I couldn’t even finish the second Wonder Woman. Opening action scene was fantastic. Then I was done. I was so confused about how her boyfriend just showed up out of no where in another man’s body. Then after I watched some reviews I was like oh the magic stone….But that whole concept makes no sense and I was like..so where did the other man’s soul go, what about the man’s family, wasn’t the man’s family looking for him?? Like what??? lol

Good breakdown. WW 1984 had all of the ingredients to create a good film but that recipe was way off. I am so tired of the trope of women sexually assaulting men as a throwaway plot device or comedic effect. It’s so hypocritical and creepy. Like I get that the film was set in the 80’s but come on!
