this is maybe the best commentary ive seen of this tv show as well as this subject in general. thank god other people were as upset by this shitty scene in an underwhelming series... so far too many ppl seem to side with the white girl rapist. that was such a fucked up scene, and even more unbelievable that its never addressed in the show as an assault or even a violation. depictions of this kind of masculinity and the ''impossibility'' of sexual assault/rape of men is why male victims suffer in silence or are mocked. not to mention historically black men were sexually abused by white women slave owners. idfk what the showrunners thought they were doing; it shows a truly disturbing lack of understanding that men have the right to consent. liked, subscribed, and checking out ur other vids! ur channel def deserves more attention

You know... you make a very valid point. When I watched Bridgerton, it did not cross my mind that that scene was technically r*pe. I knew it was wrong, but from her perspective, I understood why she did it, but it does not make it okay. Didn't notice all the consent he asked for either which makes it even more terrible on Daphne's part. Thank you for this view. Now I want to be more attentive to things like this.

Such a good video. I would only add that it's not truly colourblind casting because of one throwaway line, where someone says to Simon that it's only because the queen is mixed race that black people have been elevated in society, and so he needs to set a good example. This actually really bothered me because then it does add another dynamic throughout the whole series but also this scene. She also clearly has intent because after the act she takes a position to help conception. Such a horrible scene and it really put me off the whole series!

Thanks for this vid! I enjoyed the show but that part really rubbed me wrong and after I took a step back I realized that scene was enough for me to not watch the show or engage in any content that gets money back to the show. We as the audience know her intentions and it's clear he wants her to stop and she keeps going. She has willingly assaulted him.
I've found that the people in my life who tend to not understand issues around consent have never been in a situation where consent wasn't blatantly understood like with a long term partner. I think women enjoy this kind of content and behavior being forced on them in their chosen fiction because deep down we know the female character is lusting after the aggressive male so, again, consent is understood even if it isn't given verbally. In the fantasy he can tell you want it and you know you want it. What people don't realize is that behavior in real life with a real stranger isn't sexy, it can be downright terrifying and you "let them" rather than really want it. So, in a fantasy novel you most likely get an inner monologue or a knowing narrator advising the reader that they are attracted to the scary man so when the scary man finally comes to get it, we know she wants him to. In real life he has no way of knowing what's inside your head, and no matter what moves you may make to keep yourself at a distance, including saying no or stop, it doesn't always matter, because our society then tries to pretend fantasy is reality.
For as many women and men to be affected by the MeToo and still not understand that even in this fantasy setting this is r*pe I just won't ever understand.

This makes me think of Pop Culture Detective's video essay on sexual assault of men played for laughs, which looks at how depictions of sexual assault of men is almost always played as a joke. I think what's so disturbing about Bridgerton, is that they didn't play it as a joke and that should make it more obvious for what it is, but still doesn't because, as you point out, the idea that men should "want sex" at all times.

OK so I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that was rape but it honestly had me confused for awhile because the show completely glossed over what happened to Simon, and how this was a huge violation to him, to the point where I thought I missed something. Like you said, they showed how important consent was in this story so when I saw what happening I was honestly hoping Daphne wasn’t going to go through with it but then I realized she wouldn’t have. It was the shows biggest disappointment.

Something that's not talked about is that you can orgasm during rape. Definitely doesn't mean you wanted it. It's just a physiological response that has nothing to do with actual desire or consent. If he was orgasming, he may not have pushed her off in that moment. Let's switch genders, the husband was the one that wanted a child and he wouldn't stop even though he knew she wanted him to pull out. She had the same pleading look in her eyes but she didn't explicitly say no. People's response would probably be completely different.
