Childish Gambino’s 3005 Video FINALLY Explained
 Lossless

Dissect unpacks the meaning behind Childish Gambino's 3005 music video. Far from a simple love song, 3005 expresses Gambino's existential loneliness on display throughout the world of Because The Internet. Through the video's use of a few key symbols (a decaying teddy bear, ferris wheel) and a unique looping structure, Donald Glover questions our so-called solutions to the existential threats of the world. Finally, we compare 3005 and This Is America, and how Glover uses the same visual technique to convey a similar overall message.

This video is a part of the Dissect Podcast's 13 episode season analyzing the music, lyrics, and meaning of Because The Internet by Childish Gambino. Listen on Spotify (spoti.fi/3jPWuWI) or wherever you get your podcasts.

Written by Cole Cuchna & Camden Ostrander. Video Editing by Jake Zeeman. Score by Justice Der.

When making "This is America", Glover was like "Ok, lemme make it obvious this time."

I hate how much this album is overlooked. Donald Glover is easily the most under-appreciated artist of our time.

The phrase "hold up" in of itself is meant to delay something. He's trying to delay death

Me and my ex got together because of BTI, specifically this song. Throughout our three years 3005 was a recurring thing, telling eachother we’d be there for eachother till 3005. Eventually we broke up, I simped over her and tried to get her back, asked for another chance because I didn’t want to be alone, it’s my biggest fear more than dying. But recently I’ve remembered that before I met her I loved myself, I was happy being my own person. Being with her I loved her and prioritized her and forgot to love myself. I don’t have any bad feelings towards her and I’m forever thankful for her. But now I love myself again and I’ve moved on. Donald, BTI, 3005 & her will always be one of my biggest life lesson.

I was taught that getting into a relationship is to add to your life, not become your life. You must be content with yourself and life before committing to someone. It can be very hard to accomplish and at times people may see you as selfish, when in reality you're just acting upon a "self-first" mentality.

Donald Glover is such a smart and talented artist, who doesn’t just make music. Nobody really understood the real meanings about his songs and videos and films, because they’re so deep and complicated. That’s art!

4:30 Also, in Earth: The Oldest Computer, Gambino says “3005, the year that we fear only God will survive, to be alone is alive”

👏This is great! I'm so here for this. Cole entering the world of video essays is the most exciting news I've heard in awhile. Time to go rewatch 3005 a million more times.

i just realized i never noticed ANYTHING about the background or how the bear was getting more and more damaged, the whole time i just wondered how they shot and edited this to look like a continuous single take.
