Forge's machine worked!!!!! It was Storm keeping her power from coming back. The mind affected the body!
And Forge is Native-American and I think his mother was a Shaman, hence the book of magic. I think he's also magically inclined to an extent due to his lineage allowing him to see The Adversary haunting Storm and feeding off her misery, preventing her from rejuvenating her x-gene. I feel like she unlocked her mystical ancestry in the process, hence the transformation.
